Removethepaintcanlidandmarkalinearoundthesidethatisexactly5/8downfromthetop.  Markanotherlinearoundtheoutsidethatisexactly5/8”upfromthebottom.  Cutcarefullyalongthisline.  Cutcarefullysothatyoualsopreservethecentersectionofthecan.  Youaregoingtousethecentersectiontocutsomeadditionalparts.

Iuseasheetmetalnibblertocutmypaintcans.  Idrillasmallhole（about1/4”）tostartthecut,insertthenibbler,thenworkmywayaroundthecan.

Usetinsnipstocutthecenterbandofthepaintcan.  Makeaverticalcutparalleltotheweldthatisinthesideofthecan.Measureandcutastripofmetalfromthebottomofthecanthatisexactly13/16”tall.  Thiscutisparalleltothecutmadewhenyouremovedthebottomofthecan.  Thispieceofmetalwillbeusedtomakethepressurechambersidewall.

Thepressurechambersidewallwillbegluedtotheinsideofthetopandbottomcanparts.  Usethehightempsiliconeglueforthis.  Glueallthreepiecestogetheratthesametime（top,side,andbottom）.  Startbygluingthesidewalltotheinsideofthepressurechambertop.  （Thetopisthepiecewiththelid.）  Useenoughsiliconetogetanairtightsealeverywhere.  Iusedasmallpieceofmetal（about1/2”x11/8”）toreinforcetheseaminthesidewall.  Setthisassemblyasideuntiltheglueiscompletelycured.

MakeaDisplacer

Thedisplaceriscutfromapieceof3/16”thickfoamcoreposterboard.  Measuretheopeningofthepaintcan.  Thedisplacerwillhavetofitintothisopening,soitmustbemadealittlesmaller.  Useacompasstomarkacircleontheposterboardthatisexactly1/8”smallerindiameterthantheopeningofthepaintcan.  Thiswillprovide1/16”clearancebetweentheedgeofthedisplacerandtheopeningofthecan.  Cutcarefullyontheline.

Cuta3”pieceof1/16”musicwire.  Theeasiestwaytocutmusicwireistoscoreitwithafileandthenbenditandbreakit.  Goodqualitymusicwireisveryhardandwillbreakliketoolsteelwhenitisscoredandbent.  Placea90degreebendinthemusicwire3/4”fromoneend.  Thisbendshouldbeascloseto90degreesasyoucangetittobe.

Ifyouhaveadrillpressyoucanuseittocreateasimplejigforgluingthedisplacerrodtothedisplacer.  Simplydrilla3/32”holethroughaflatboard.  Thisholewillholdthedisplacerrodatthecorrectanglewhiletheglueiscuring.

Pressthelongendofthedisplacerrodthroughthecenterofthedisplaceranddownthroughtheholeinthejig.  Applyenoughpressuretocompresstheposterboardjustalittlebitaroundthecenter.  Fillthedepressionwithepoxyglueandsetitasideuntilthegluehascured.  Oncethegluecuresremovetheassembledpartfromthejigandcheckthealignment.  Therodmustbeperpendiculartothesurfaceofthedisplacerandintheexactcenterofthedisk.

PreparetheDriveCylinder

Drilla7/16”holeinthecenterofthebottomofthefilmcan.  Thisholeisdrilledtofittheshortpipenipplethatisusedtoconnectthedrivecylindertothepressurechamberlid.

Drillaholeinthecenterofthelidandcarveitoutuntilitisaslargepossible,untilonlyaringremains.  Thisringwillbeusedtosealthediaphragmtothedrivecylinder.

PreparethePressureChamberLid

Useacompasstofindthecenterofthepaintcanlid.  Todothis,setthecompasstomatchtheradiusofthelid,andthenuseittodrawalinenearthecenterofthelid.  Rotatethelid90degreesandrepeattheprocess.  Continuetorotatethelidanddrawmarkswiththecompassuntilyouhaveestablishedthecenterpointofthelid.

Locatethepositionofthedrivecylinder.  Thedrivecylinderwillbepositionedasclosetotheedgeofthelidaspossiblewhilestillbeingmountedtotheflatsurfaceofthelid.  Markthepositionoftheholeusingthefilmcanasaguide.  Drilltheholewitha7/16”drillbit.
