IwouldliketoenthusiasticallyrecommendPeiYiforadmissiontotheDepartmentofElectricalEngineeringandComputerScience,UniversityofCaliforniaBerkeley.PeiYinotonlyhasacademicbackgroundandtechnicalqualificationsforadmissiontoyourprogram,butalsohasdemonstratedtheindependence,perseverance,andotherpersonalcharactersnecessarytosucceedinSciences.

IhaveworkedwithPeiYiforoneandahalfyearssincehebeganthePrincipalFundProjectin2002.Ithinkhehasdevelopedamaturecharacterasayoungacademicresearchworker.PeiYiisaverydiligentstudentinourlab.Heisalmostthelastoneleavingthelabeveryday.Toacquainthimselfwiththeworkmorequickly,hechosemygraduatecourse:

ElectronPhysics.Thoughhehasanexcellentscholasticaptitude,Iwasafraidthatthecoursewasalittledifficultforanundergraduatestudent.Asthingswentby,Ifoundmyworrywasquiteunnecessary.Hestudiedrelevantcoursessuchasquantummechanicsbyhimselfandgotthehighestscoreformycourse.Anintelligentyoungmanwithhard-workingspiritcanalwaysliveafruitfulandeffectivelife.

I’mdeeplyimpressedbyhisabilitytoworkindependently.Iwasverybusylastyearforofficialwork,andhavelittletimetoguidehim.HowevereverytimeIseehim,hewasworkingorreadinginthelab.Hetoldmethathelearnedbyhimselfthroughreadingtheacademicjournalandlearnedfromothergroupsinourlaboratory.Inaddition,hehasastrongdesireforgoodqualityofacademicwork.Heattendedeveryseminarandhadasuccessfulcorporationwithresearchersfromothergroups.

Aflexibleandadaptablepeoplecandoanyworkassignedtohim,sodoesMr.Pei.Duringtheperiodofhisprincipalfundresearch,heestablishedthesuitablemodelforfieldemission,andfinishedthesimulationofspacechargeeffect.Healsomadeprominentprogressoncalculationoffield-enhancementfactorandwrotetwopapers.Onepaperisacceptedby“SeriesofTheFirstPrincipalFundPapers”andanotherpaperistobesubmittedtoaninternationaljournal.ThisisalsoademonstrationofhisScienceandEnglishability.
