OneproblemisthatIdon’tlookanydifferentfromtheropeople.So

sometimessomechildreninmyprimaryschoolwouldlaugh,whenIgotoutofbreathafterrunningashortwayorhadtostopandresthalfwayupthestairs.SometimesIwastooweaktogotoschoolsomyeducationsuffered.EverytimeIreturnedafteranabsence,IfeltstupidbecauseIwasbehindtheothers.

Mylifeisaloteasierathighschoolbecausemyfellowstudentshaveacceptedme.Thefewwhocannotseetherealpersoninsidemybodydonotmakemeannoyed,andIjustignorethem.AllinallIhaveagoodlife.IamhappytohavefoundmanythingsIcando,likewritingandcomputerprogramming.MyambitionistoworkforafirmthatdevelopscomputersoftwarewhenIgrowup.LastyearIinventedacomputerfootballgameandabigcompanyhasdecidedtobuyfromme.Ihaveaverybusylifewithnotimetositaroundfeelingsorryformyself.Aswellasgoingtomoviesandfootballmatcheswithmyfriends,Ispendalotoftimewithmypets.Ihavetworabbits,aparrot,atankfulloffishandatortoise.TolookaftermypetsproperlytakesalotoftimebutIfinditworthwhile.Ialsohavetodoalotofwork,especiallyifIhavebeenawayforawhile.

Inmanywaysmydisabilityhashelpedmegrowstrongerpsychologicallyandbecomemoreindependent.Ihavetoworkhardtoliveanormallifebutithasbeenworthit.IfIhadachancetosayonethingtohealthychildren,itwouldbethis:

havingadisabilitydoesnotmeanyourlifeisnotsatisfying.So

don’tfeelsorryforthedisabledormakefunofthem,anddon’tignorethemeither.Justacceptthemforwhotheyare,andgivethemencouragementtoliveasrichandfullalifeasyoudo.

LarryBelmontworkedforacompanythatmaderobots.Recentlyithadbegunexperimentingwithahouseholdrobot.ItwasgoingtobetestedoutbyLarry’swife,Claire.

Clairedidn’twanttherobotinherhouse,especiallyasherhusbandwouldbeabsentforthreeweeks,butLarrypersuadeherorallowhertobeharmed.Itwouldbeabonus.However,whenshefirstsawtherobot,shefeltalarmed.His

namewasTonyandheseemedmorelikeahumanthanamachine.Hewastallandhandsomewithsmoothhairandadeepvoicealthoughhisfacialexpressionneverchanged.

OnthesecondmorningTony,wearinganapron,broughtherbreakfastandthenaskedherwhethersheneededhelpdressing.Shefeltembarrassedandquicklytoldhimtogo.Itwasdisturbingandfrighteningthathelookedsohuman.

Oneday,Clairementionedthatshedidn’tthinkshewasclever.Tonysaid

thatshemustfeelveryunhappytosaythat.Clairethoughtitwasridiculoustobeofferedsympathybyarobot.Butshebegantotrusthim.Shetoldhimhowshewasoverweightandthismadeherfeelunhappy.Alsoshefeltherhomewasn’telegantenoughforsomeonelikeLarrywhowantedtoimprovehis

socialposition.Shewasn’tlikeGladysClaffern,oneoftherichestandmostpowerfulwomenaround.

AsafavorTonypromisedtohelpClairemakeherselfsmarterandherhomemoreelegant.SoClaiseborrowedapileofbooksfromthelibraryforhimtoread,orrather,scan.Shelookedathisfingerswithwonderastheyturnedeachpageandsuddenlyreachedforhishand.Shewasamazedbyhisfingernailsandthesoftnessandwarmthofhisskin.Howabsurd,shethought.Hewasjustamachine.

TonygaveClaireanewhaircutandchangedthemakeupshewore.Ashewasnotallowedtoaccompanyhertotheshops,hewroteoutalistofitemsforher.Clairewentintothecityandboughtcurtains,cushions,acarpetandbedding.Thenshewentintoajewelershoptobuyanecklace.Whentheclerkatthecounterwasrudetoher,sherangTonyupandtoldtheclerktospeaktohim.Theclerkimmediatelychangedhisattitude.ClairethankedTony,telling

himthathewasa“dear”.Assheturnedaround,therestoodGladysClaffern.

Howawfultobediscoveredbyher,Clairethought.Bytheamusedandsurprisedlookonherface,ClaireknewthatGladysthoughtshewashavingan

affair.Afterall,sheknewClaire’shusbandnamewasLarry,notTony.

WhenClairegothome,sheweptwithangerinherarmchair.Gladyswas

everythingClairewantedtobe.“Youcanbelikeher”her,TonyandtoldsuggestedthatsheinviteGladysandherfriendstothehousethenightbeforehewastoleaveandLarrywastoreturn.Bythattime,Tonyexpectedthehousetobecompletelytransformed.

Tonyworkedsteadilyontheimprovements.Clairetriedtohelponcebutwastooclumsy.ShefelloffaladderandeventhoughTonywasinthenextroom,hemanagedtocatchherintime.Heheldherfirmlyinhisarmsandshefeltthewarmthofhisbody.Shescreamed,pushedhimawayandrantoherroomfortherestoftheday.

Thenightofthepartyarrived.Theclockstruckeight.TheguestswouldbearrivingsoonandClairetoldTonytogointoanotherroom.Atthatmoment,Tonyfoldedhisarmsaroundher,bendinghisfaceclosetohers.Shecriedout

“Tony”andthenheardhimdeclarethathedidn’twanttoleaveherthenextdayandthathefeltmorethanjustthedesiretopleaseher.Thenthefrontdoorbell

rang.Tonyfreedheranddisappearedfromsight.ItwasthenthatClairerealizedthatTonyhadopenedthecurtainsofthefrontwindow.Herguestshadseeneverything!

ThewomenwereimpressedbyClaire,thehouseandthedeliciouscuisine.Justbeforetheyleft,ClaireheardGladyswhisperingtoanotherwomanthatshehadneverseenanyonesohandsomeasTony.Whatasweetvictorytobeenviedbythosewomen!

Shemightnotbeasbeautifulasthem,butnoneofthemhadsuchahandsomelover.

Thensheremembered-Tonywasjustamachine.Sheshouted“Leaveme

alone”andrantoherbed.Shecriedallnight.ThenextmorningacardroveupandtookTonyaway.

ThecompanywasverypleasedwiththereportofTonyonhisthreeweekswithClaire.Tonyhadprotectedahumanbeingfromharm.HehadpreventedClairefromharmingherselfthroughherownsenseoffailure.HehadopenedthecurtainsthatnightsothattheotherwomenwouldseehimandClaire,

knowingthattherewasnorisktoClaire’smarriage.ButeventhoughTonyhadbeensoclever,hewouldhavetoberebuilt-youcannothavewomenfallingin

lovewithmachines.

Unit3Underthesea

Iwas16whenIbeganworkinJune1902atthewhalingstation.Ihadheardofthekillersthateveryyearhelpedwhalerscatchhugewhales.Ithought,atthetime,thatthiswasjustastorybutthenIwitnesseditwithmyowneyesmanytimes.

OntheafternoonIarrivedatthestation,asIwassortingoutmyaccommodation,Iheardaloudnoisecomingfromthebay.Werandowntotheshoreintimetoseeanenormousanimaloppositeusthrowingitselfoutofthewaterandthencrashingdownagain.Itwasblackandwhiteandfish-shaped.

Withoutpausingwejumpedintotheboatwiththeotherwhalersandheadedoutintothebay.IlookeddownintothewaterandcouldseeOldTomswimmingbytheboat,showingustheway.Afewminuteslater,therewasnoTom,soGeorgestartedbeatingthewaterwithhisoarandtherewasTom,circlingbacktotheboat,leadingustothehuntagain.

Usingatelescopewecouldseethatsomethingwashappening.Aswe

drewcloser,Icouldseeawhalebeingattackedbyapackofaboutsixother

killers.Thekillersovertherearethrowingthemselvesontopofthewhale’sblow-holetostopitbreathing.Andthoseothersarestoppingitdivingorfleeing

outtosea.Georgetoldme,pointingtowardsthehunt.Andjustatthatmoment,themostextraordinarythinghappened.Thekillersstartedracingbetweenourboatandwhalejustlikeapackofexciteddogs.AlthoughOldTomandotherkillerswerefiercehunters,theyneverharmedorattackedpeople.Infact,theyprotectedthem.TherewasonedaywhenwewereoutinthebayduringahuntandJameswaswashedofftheboat.

Theseawasroughthatdayanditwasdifficulttohandletheboat.The

waveswerecarryingJamesfurtherandfurtherawayfromus.FromJames

’s

face,Icouldseehewasterrifiedofbeingabandonedbyus.ThensuddenlyI

sawashark.IttookoverhalfanhourtogettheboatbacktoJames,andwhen

weapproachedhim,IsawJamesbeingfirmlyheldupinthewaterbyOldTom.

Icouldn’tbelievemyeyes.Therewereshoutsof“Welldone,OldTom

”

and

“ThankGod”aswepulledJamesbackintotheboat.AndthenOldTomwas
