“Thenovelofthewriter19thcenturywasfemale.”Thereemergedanumberofbrilliantwomenwhoseworksgavevoicetothefeelingsandaspirationsoftheeducatedwomenoftheirage.CharlotteBronteisoneofthosekindsofthegreatestwomanwriters,andherJaneEyreisundoubtedlyanoutstandingwoman’sdeclarationofindependenceandconsciousness.

ThispaperwillthroughanalyzingthecharacterofJaneespeciallyherstrongdesireforrebelliousspiritsandfreedom,itiseasytoseethatJanerefusedtoobtaineconomicsecurityfromMr.Rochester,Janeaspiredforequalandtruelove,andsheemphasizedonthesignificanceofbeingspiritualequalityandindependenceinloveaffairs.Herrebellingcharacterandpersistentofloveandfreedommadeherchangeherplainlittleorphandestinytoaharmonylifewithherspouseintheend.

Luojingguosaid“JaneEyreisthefirstEnglishnoveleventhemostpowerfulandpopularnovel,whichpresentsthemodernviewofwomen’spositioninsociety.”AlthoughJanelivedinthe19thcenturyinEngland,shehadsetagloriousimageandexampleforthemodernwoman.Jane’sspiritshadaneffectiveinfluenceonwomanwholivesinthe21century.

In19thcentury,womandidnothaveanystatus.Atthattime,theywerediscriminatedandinferiortoman.Atthattime,womendidnotenjoysomeofthemostbasicpolitical,educational,emotional,andmaterialpowerinthecircumstances.IntheVictorianAge,itwasveryhumbletobeagovernor,theidealstatusofwomenintheagewasstayathome,theworkingwomenwereregardedaseccentricperson;

peoplethoughtwomenshouldstayathometolookaftertheirhusbandsandchildren,otherwisetheyhadviolatedthenatureofwomen,atthattimemenplayedacentralroleinbothsocietyandfamily.

Undertheinfluenceoftheindustrialrevolution,Britainin19thcenturywasduringtheprocessofsocialtransformationfromagriculturalsocietytoindustrialsociety.Thedevelopmentofsocietyandeconomicpromotedthelargechangesinwomen'

seducation.Althoughpatriarchyhaddeeprooted,andtherewerephenomenonofgenderinequalityinmanyaspectsofeducation,Britishwomen'

seducationincreased,whichincludesnotonlytheeducationopportunitiesofcommonwomen,butalsothekindsofeducation.Thus,thedevelopmentofwomen'

seducationenhancedthewomen'

slevel,promotingthereformationongenderrelations,layingthebasisforthechangesofthewomen'

ssocialstatus.JaneEyreisjustthetransitionalimageofthattime.DionelStevensonsaid,“JaneEyrewasanintolerablerenegadefromallthestandardsbehaviorexpectedofrespectivegirls.”W.ACraikthought,“TheBronte’sbiographydoesthemadisservicewiththereader,maypreventhimfromseeingproperlyareairindividualmeritsorindeedwhatisherpurposeinwritingit.”

ThemaincharacterofJaneEyre’sthoughtsexpressedthewomen’ssenseofrebellingspirittowardsthemaleworld.Becauseforcenturieswomenaresubordinated,oppressedanddiscriminatedbythesociety.TherebellingspiritofJaneisjustthesymbolizationofwomen’sconsciousabouttheirsocialposition.

2.1TherebellingspiritsinGatesheld

JaneEyrehadshowedherrebellingspiritswhenshewasalittlegirl.Afterhermotherandfatherdead,JaneEyrewassenttoheruncletobringup.Althoughshedependedonheruncleforaliving,shehatedheraunt’smistreatmentsandinsultstoher.Whenshewasbeatbyhercousin-JaneReed,sherebelledbravelyandscoldedhim“Wickedandcruelboy,”“youarelikemurder….youarelikeaslave-driveryouareliketheRomanemperors!

”(inchaptertwo).Sheblamedallthebaddeedsthatheraunthaddonetoher,“mysoulbegantoexpand,toexult,withthestrangestsceneoffreedom,oftriumph,Ieverfelt.Itwascrueltoa10yearsoldgirl,sheneverfeltdesperate.”(inchapterfour)

2.2TherebellingspiritsinLogwoodOrphanage

AfterJanecametoLogwoodOrphanage,herrebellingspiritsbecamemature,hercontinuestrugglingimagebecamevividanddistinctive.ShesaidtoHelen“ifpeoplewerealwayskindandobedienttothosewhoarecruelandunjust,thewickedpeoplewouldhaveitalltheirway,theywouldneverfeelafraid,andsotheywouldneveralter,butwouldgrowworseandworse.Whenwestruckatwithoutareason,weshouldstrikebackagainveryhard;

Iamsureweshould…sohardastoteachthepersonwhostruckusnevertodoitagain.”(inchaptersix).Thesesharpwordsandcriticalcommentsallcamefromatenyearschild.ItisobviousthatJanewasbornwiththecharacterofrebellingspirit.

2.3TherebellingspiritsinThornfield

Whenshecametothornfield,althoughshelovedMr.Rochesterdeeply,shehadalwaysobeyedhim.Shesaidtohimshejustobeyhimwhenheisright.Mr.Rochester,agrim-looking,energetic,quick-tempered,amiddle-agedman.Mr.RochesterlivedinahigherclassthanJane,whileJane‘sideabeingequalandbalancedrelationshipwithMr.Rochesterimpressedhim.

Onecanhardlybefailorbepoor,butnottogiveupthepursuitforthefreedominheart.InBronte’sJaneEyre,Janewaslookingforanewlife,pursuingofprogressandhappinessespeciallythedesireforfreedomallthetimemadehersuccessfullyinherownlife.

3.1DesireforfreedomwhenleavingGatesheld

ThemomentsheleftGatesheldwasthebeginningofhertofindanewlifeforherself.Althoughshewasdelicateandthin,shewasbornwithcouragetoadventure.Shehadstrongdesireforfreedomtocomeacrossalltheadventuredeedsbeforeherlife.WhenshewastenyearsoldinGatesheldatheruncle’shome,shecouldnotwithstandheraunt’smistreat,sosherequiredheraunttosendhertocharitableschool.Althoughshewasalittlegirlatthattime,shewasnotafraidofhermysteriousworld.Sheknewthatifshelivedinheraunt’shome,shewillbelostherfreedomforalongtimeormaybeherwholelife.“Besidesschoolwouldbeacompletechange:

itimpliedalongjourney,anentireseparationfromGatesheld,andanentranceintoanewlife.”(inchapter3).

3.2DesireforfreedomwhenleavingLogwoodOrphanage

JanespenteightyearsinLogwood,shehadbeingastudentforsixyears,andthelastyearshebecameateacherthere.Sheovercameallthedifficultiesandhardshipinthatbrutalandnightmarishschool.ThegirlsinthatschoolalmostbecamemachineswhichcanonlyworkandreadBible.Afterleavingherbestfriendandteacher,shewastiredofthedulllifeinLogwood.LifeinLogwoodOrphanagemaybethemostagonizingmemorytoJane.“MyworldhadforyearsinLogwood:

myexperiencehadbeenofitsrulesandsystems,nowIrememberedthattherealworldwaswide,andthatavariedfieldofhopesandfears,ofsensations,andexcitements,awaitedthosewhohadcouragetogoforthintoitsexpanse,toseekrealknowledgeoflifeamidstitsperils”(inchapter10)JanelostherselfinLogwood,andshefeltshelostherfreedominthere.SosheleftLogwoodOrphanage,andanadvertisementgaveherchancetobeanewgovernoratThornfieldHall.

3.3DesireforfreedomwhenleavingThornfield

ItwasobviousthatJanewasfoundofchangingandunknown,andverycuriousaboutexploringthemysteriousworld.InThornfieldshefoundherself,andalsofoundhertruelove.WhenMr.RochesterandJanebegoingtogetmarried,sheheartthatMr.RochesterwifeBerthaisstillalive.Shockedanddeeplyhurt,andalsobecauseofherinnerheartofherwasfreeandrebelled,shemakesuphermindtoleaveRochesterdecisively.

Inthe19thcentury,womendidnothavetherightstospeakouttheirownfeelingsandideas;

theywerethesubordinationsofmen.JaneEyreconveyedadeepandprofoundsignificanceonthehumanbeinginthatVictorianAge,whichwomenwereequalwithmenandtheywereatthesameclassasmen.

4.1WhenshewasatGatesheld

Thattime,womensimplycouldnotprovethattheirownlanguageofthevaluefortheequalandwomenwillnotalwayshavetheirownvoice.ButJanesaid,didnothidethetruthinherheartsandthoughts,shesaidtoReed:

“people,thoughtyouwereagoodwoman,butyoubad,youhard-hearted,youwilllie.”WhenshemistakenRochesterwouldmarryMissIngram,shesaid:

“YouthoughtIwasanautomaticmachine?

Nofeelingsofamachine?

AnddoyouthinkthatbecauseIampoor.Obscure,plainandlittle,Iamsoullessandheartless?
