Environmentalproblemshavereachedsuchproportionsthatpeoplefeelinternationalorganizationsmustbesetuptointerveneinworldaffairstoresolvetheseproblems.Whetherthiswillresolvetheproblemisveryunlikelyasinternationalorganizationsarejustanextensionofhumanbehavior.Thatis,ifhumanconflictscannotberesolvedathome,thentheyareunlikelytoberesolvedattheinternationallevel.Nevertheless,internationalorganizationsdoattractattentiontothegrowingproblemofaimsoftheinternationalcommunitytoresolvetheissueofenvironmentalpollutionandsupporttheircause,Idonotbelieveitisthebestoronlywaytoprotecttheenvironment;

infact,itisonlyasmallpartofwhatisneededinaglobalinitiative.

Allworldproblems,whetheritisenvironmentalpollution,war,energyinsufficiency,orfamine,arisefromtheabusivebehaviorofallindividuals.Therefore,thesolutiontoalltheseproblemsistheneedforacollectiveconsciousness.Whatismeantbythisisthateachindividualmustbeawareoftheimpactheorshehasontheworldandtheiruniqueparttoplayinthisworld.Afterall,ifoneishappywithhislife,hewillsurelynotendeavortoharmtheenvironmentoranyoneelse.Hisbehaviorwillbethatofaresponsibleindividual.

Whatisneeded,therefore,iseducation.Educationisthekeytoallproblemsanditstartsfrompregnancyallthewaytoadulthoodandbeyond.Furthermore,educationmeansthatchildrenallovertheworldshouldbeallowedtogotoschoolswithgoodteachersandwhereteachingmaterialsandmethodscanbeadaptedtoeachindividual.Educationmeansraisingchildrentoberesponsibleindividuals.

Thismaysoundlikeutopia,butitisnot:

ifacountryhadimportantproblemsinitseducationalsystem,thenitshouldrealizethatitiscontributingtotheworld’sproblems.Theseareperhapslongtermsolutions,buttheyaremorerealisticsolutionsthansettingupyetanotherinternationalorganization.

2.Asaresultofcountriesbecomingmoreandmoreindustrialized,pollutionhasbecomeaseriousproblem.Discusssomewaysthatcanmitigatethepollutionproblems.

 

 

Toensuretheprotectionofourscenicglobalvillagefromenvironmentaldegradationbymass-productionandmass-consumption(mostlyindevelopedandpartiallyindevelopingcountries)forourselvesandforfuturegenerations,itistheobligationofeveryindividualandpeopletotakeanactivepartinenvironmentalprotection.

WehaveoftenheardthatherearedangerouslevelsofairpollutioninmajorcitiesoftheworldallthewayformLosAngelestoSeoul.Yetlittlehasbeendonetosolvetosolvethisproblemworldwide.Researchersaretellingusthatitwillcertainlycostmoneytocleanupovercrowdedcities,butifwedonot,therewillbeagreaterpricetopay---thepriceofshorteningourownlifeexpectancy.

Asaresultofcontinuedpollution,wecananticipatehigheroutlaysinhealthcareinthefuture,nottomentiontheextracostsofcleaningupourwater,andprotectingourfoodsupply.Scientistsaretryingtoinformusthatinthelongrun,wewillsavemoneyandournaturalresourcesbydoingwhatittakestowipeouttrendsinpollutionnow.

Itseemstomethatitisreallyamatterofhavingasufficientlylongtermvisionsothattheactivitiesofsocietiestakeintoaccountanydamagestotheenvironment.Inparticular,itisforthoseeconomistsingovernmenttoincorporatethecostsofharmingtheenvironment.Oncewedothat,itwillbeclearertoeveryonethatitwillpaytochangethewaywecurrentlygoaboutfunctioninginsociety.

Tomakeonefinalpoint,technologiesexistnow,cleantechnologiesthatproducealotlesspollution.Itisjustamatterofcost.ThisiswhyIthinkitwillbeveryimportantfortheindustrializedworldtocollaborateverycloselywiththedevelopingworldsothattherichcountriesdonotjustexportold,obsolete,anddirtytechnologies.

3.Forestsarethelungsoftheearth.Theirdestructionwillaccelerateextinctionofanimalsandultimatelymankind.Forthisreason,loggingintheworld’srainforestsshouldbephasedoutoverthenextdecade.Towhatextentdoyouagreeordisagreewiththisopinion?

Theworld’sforestssamplethebestsceneryandincrediblenaturaldiversityavailableonearth.Theyprovidehomesforindigenouswildlife,specialhistoricsitesandplacesofculturalinterest.Manyoftheworld’sforestshavebeendevelopedfortourismandpublicrecreation.Thegovernmentoftheworldthereforehavetheresponsibilitytodecidehowbesttomanageinternationalloggingindustriesandforestsinordertoprotecttheirspecialvaluetoanimals’andultimatelytomankind’ssurvival.

OneofthebiggestproblemsfacingnativeforestssuchastheAmazonianrainforestsisillegallogging.Thefirstandmostobviousproblemassociatedwiththeillegalfellingofnativeforestsisthatitdeniesalivelihoodtomanypoorpeoplelivinginforestareas.Thisinturnrobspoorgovernmentsofbillionsofdollarsastherevenuecreatedaroundthesaleofnativetreesissuckedoutofthelocaleconomyintothebankaccountsofthosefewwhoareinvolvedinsuchillegaloperations.

Afurtherproblemistheenvironmentaldegradationthatwearewitnessinginforestedareasofthedevelopingworldwhicharenowbeingstrippedbareoftreeswithoutanyreplantingschemesinplace.Asanyonewhoknowsanythingaboutthelawsonnaturewillagree,forestslikeanylivingspeciesmustbeadequatelystockedwithhealthytreesaplings,orplantedwithreplacementnativeseedlings.Moreover,forestoperatorsmustensurethatyoungtreesarewellestablishedandareabletogrowfreelyfollowingreforestationprocedures.Onlyifsuchmeasuresarecarriedoutcanweallowloggingtocontinueintofuturedecades.

ThefinalpointthatIwouldliketoraiseisthatwide-scaleillegalloggingprovokesandsustainsconflictsinmanyregionsoftheworld.Asmuchoftheloggingoccurringindevelopingcountriesisaconsequenceofpoorgovernance,atlocal,nationalandinternationallevels,governmentsneedtobandtogethertoensurethisdoesnotcontinuetodenudeourplanet.Inordertocombatillegalloggingataninternationallevelwemustensurethattradeintimberspeciesisconductedinagreementwithinternationaltradelawsinendangeredspecies.Onlythroughapplyingstrictermeasuresinthetradeofforestsshouldwebeabletoprotectspeciesthatallourlivesdependon.

4.Aquariumsandwildlifesanctuariesareseenassourcesofeducationandentertainmentforfamilies.Theyarealsoessentialtoconductlife-savingresearch.However,thereisoppositiontoconfininganimalsinthisway.Discusssomeoftheargumentsforandagainstthemaintenanceofzoosandpresentyouropinion.

Asachild,Iremembervisitingthelocalaquariumquitefrequentlywithmyfamilytoenjoydolphinandsealshowswhichweretrulyentertaining.Inretrospect,however,Icannotrecalltheaquariumstaffevertryingtoteachthespectatorshowtoprotectmarinelife.Thattypeofthinkingwasnotsopopularbackthenbutthingshavechangedinrecentdecadeswiththeadventofenvironmentalactivistgroups,suchasGreenpeaceandeco-friendlyzoosandaquariumswhichhavebeendesignedtosimulatenaturalhabitatsforthoseanimalslivinginconfinement.Needlesstosay,itisdifficulttogeneralizeaboutzoosandaquariumsbecausetothisday,placeswhicharelittlemorethanprisonsforanimalsstillexist.

Recently,Ireadthe2002BookerAwardwinningnovel,LifeofPi,byYannMartelwhichenabledmetounderstandthiscomplexdebateovertheroleofzoosandaquariumsatadeeperlevel.Inhisbook,Marteldisclaimsthewidelyheldbeliefthatanimalslivingincaptivityhaveashorterlifeexpectancythanthoselivinginthewild.Instead,themainprotagonistsinhisnovelwhoisazoologist,claimsthattheoppositeistrueandthatinfactanimalshaveahigherchanceatsurvivalwhentakenintocaptivity.Thisislargelyduetothefactthatnaturalhabitatsarediminishingbecauseofman’songoingexpansionintowhatwereonceun-peopledenvironments.

Expertsinthefieldofanimalandmarineresearcharecurrentlymakingitpossibleformankindtoconservemanyspeciesthatarecurrentlyatriskintheirnaturalhabitatsduetorisingenvironmentalhazardssuchasillegalpoaching,waterpollutionanddeforestation.Perhapsweshouldlookonzoosandaquariumsasatemporarysolutionuntilatimewhenmancanseetotheconservationoftheworld’severdecreasingnaturalhabitatsandthewildlifethatshouldrightfullyinhabitthem.
