Bewareofthosewhousethetruthtodeceive.Whensomeonetellsyousomethingthatistrue,butleavesoutimportantinformationthatshouldbeincluded,hecancreateafalseimpression.

Forexample,someonemightsay,“Ijustwonahundreddollarsonthelottery.Itwasgreat.Itookthatdollarticketbacktothestoreandturneditinforonehundreddollars!

Thisguy’sawinner,right?

Maybe,maybenot.Wethendiscoverthatheboughttwohundredtickets,andonlyonewasawinner.He’sreallyabigloser!

Hedidn’tsayanythingthatwasfalse,buthedeliberatelyomittedimportantinformation.That’scalledahalf-truth.Half-truthsarenottechnicallylies,buttheyarejustasdishonest.

Untrustworthycandidatesinpoliticalcampaignsoftenusethistactic.Let’ssaythatduringGovernorSmith’slastterm,herstatelostonemillionjobsandgainedthreemillionjobs.Thensheseeksanotherterm.Oneofheropponentsrunsanadsaying,“DuringGovernorSmith’sterm,thesatelostonemillionjobs!

”That’strue.Howeveranhoneststatementwouldhavebeen,“DuringGovernorSmith’sterm,thestatehadanetgainoftwomillionjobs.”

Advertiserswillsometimesusehalf-truths.It’sagainstthelawtomakefalseclaimssotheytrytomisleadyouwiththetruth.Anadmightboast,“NineoutoftendoctorsrecommendYuckyPillstocurenosepimples.”ItfailstomentionthattheyonlyaskedtendoctorsandnineofthemworkfortheYuckyCorporation.

Thiskindofdeceptionhappenstoooften.It’sasadfactoflife:
