SchoolcafeteriasintheUnitedStatesmustfollowtheguidelinessetoutbytheNationalSchoolLunchProgram(NSLP),agovernmentservicethatprovideslow-costorfreelunchestostudents.Theguidelinesrequireschoolstoservemorefruit,vegetables,wholegrains,andlow-fatproducts.Schoolsmustalsolimittheamountsoffat,salt,andsugarinthefoodtheyserve.

TheresearchersfoundthatnoneofthepackedlunchestheyexaminedmetalloftherequirementsontheNSLPlist.Onlytwenty-sevenpercentofthepackedlunchesmetatleastthreeoftherequirements.Ninety-fivepercentofalllunchesdidnotcontainaservingofvegetables.Oneinfourlunchesdidnotincludeamainfooditem.SinceaboutfortypercentofAmericanschoolchildrenbringtheirlunch,unhealthyfoodintheirlunchboxescouldhaveseriousconsequences.Servingnutritiousfoodtochildrennotonlykeepsthemhealthy,butalsohelpstoestablishgoodeatinghabits.

Unfortunately,sincetheUSgovernmentpassedthelawsrequiringschoolstoservehealthiermeals,thenumberofchildrenbuyingschoolluncheshasdroppedbynearlyfourpercent.“SchoolmealscontainsomanythingsthatIdislike,”studentswhoprefertoeathome-packedlunchessaid.InCanada,onlytentofifteenpercentofschoolchildrenhaveaccesstoschoolmeals.Therearenonationalrulesforhealthyschoollunches,butmostprovinceshaveestablishedtheirownguidelines.
