Itistheveryfinestsoot–sosmallthatitrootsdeepwithinthelungsandfromtheentersthebloodstream–thatcontributestomostofthepublic–healthtollofairpollutionincludingdeath.Dieselsoot,whichcanalsocausecancer,isamajorproblembecauseitisconcentratedincitiesalongtransportationzonesaffectingoverpopulatedareas.Itisthoughttocontributetohalfthedeathsfromairpollutioninurbancenters.Froexample,1in6peopleintheU.S.livenearadiesel–pollutionhotspotlikearailyard,portterminalorfreeway.

Hopefully–thoughtheproblemmaygetworsebeforeitgetsbetter.Thegoodnewsisthatitdoesn’ttakeamajortechnologicaladvancetoimproveurbanair.Switchingfromdieselfueltounleaded(无铅燃油)helps,asdonewerandcleanercarswhicharelesslikelytosendoutpollutants.Powerplants–evenonesthatburnmineralfuelslikecoal–canbefittedwithpollution–controlequipmentthat,ataprice,willgreatlyreducesmogandotherpollutants.
