Overtime,stoneshavefallenfromthemountainsidesontothelakebed.Someofthestonesaresmall,thoughothersweighasmuchas700pounds.Oncetheyaresituatedontheflatsurface,onemightbeeasytothinkthattheywouldremainthereforthousandsofyears.This,however,isnotthecase.Thesehugerocksandstones(knownasSailingStones,SlidingRocks,orMovingRocks)arefoundalloverthedrylakebedwithlongtrailshavingformedbehindthem,extendingforhundredsofmeters.Sincethereisnoevidenceofhumanoranimalactivitiesinthemovementofthesestones,onehastowonderhowitishappening.

Notonlydothestonesmove,buttheymoveincompletelydifferentdirections.Twostonescouldstartnexttooneanother,andstartmovingataboutthesamespeed,butonewillsuddenlystoporchangedirections.Sometimesthesailingstoneswillturnaroundcompletely,movingbacktowardstheirpointoforigin.Thetracksleftbehindaregenerallynowiderthan30cm,andlessthan2.5cmdeep.Thelongesttrackshavebeenformingformanyyears,thoughtodate,nobodyhaseverseentheevent.
