ByDecember21,1891,Naismithhadcompiledaroughlistof13basicrules,postedthemontheschoolbulletin(公告)boardandwiththeassistanceofthejanitor(守卫),nailedtwopeachbasketsonoppositeendsofthegymnasium.Heevenmanagedtoconvincethejanitortoclimbaladderandretrievetheballeachtimeaplayersuccessfullylandeditinapeachbasket.
Studentslovedthegameanditwasn’tlongbeforeschoolsandcollegesacrossthecountrycaughtbasketballfeverandintroducedthegametotheirowninstitutions.ThelastthingNaismithdidwasinventanameforhiswildlysuccessfulgame.AfewofhisstudentssuggestedNaismith-ball,buthedecidedthatwouldneverworkandtheyeventuallysettledonbasketball.
Thepopularityofbasketballspreadquickly.Basketballwasintroducedinmanynationsasearlyas1893.AnditwasintroducedattheBerlinOlympicsin1936.NaismithwasflowntoBerlintowatchthegames.HespenttheremainderofhislifeteachingphysicaleducationanddiedinLawrence,Kansas,in1939.
