Itwasfirstpublishedin1881inCanadabeforeits1882publicationintheUnitedStates.ThebookrepresentsTwain'
sfirstattemptathistoricalfiction.Setin1547,thenoveltellsthestoryoftwoyoungboyswhoareidenticalinappearance:
TomCanty,apauperwholiveswithhisabusivefatherinOffalCourtoffPuddingLaneinLondon,andEdwardVIofEngland,sonofHenryVIIIofEngland.
MarkTwain(pseudonymofSamuelLanghorneClemens,1835-1910),wasanAmericanwriter,journalistandhumorist,whowonaworldwideaudienceforhisstoriesoftheyouthfuladventuresofTomSawyerandHuckleberryFinn.ClemenswasbornonNovember30,1835inFlorida,Missouri,ofaVirginianfamily.In1864TwainleftforCalifornia,andworkedinSanFranciscoasareporter.HevisitedHawaiiasacorrespondentforTheSacramentoUnion,publishinglettersonhistripandgivinglectures.Hesetoutonaworldtour,travelinginFranceandItaly.Between1876and1884hepublishedseveralmasterpieces,TomSawyer(1881)andThePrinceandThePauper(1881).LifeontheMississippiappearedin1883andHuckleberryFinnin1884.Inthe1890sTwainlostmostofhisearningsinfinancialspeculationsandinthefailureofhisownpublishingfirm.TwaintouredNewZealand,Australia,India,andSouthAfrica.HDuringhislongwritingcareer,Twainalsoproducedaconsiderablenumberofessays.
II.ASummaryoftheBook
ThePrinceandthePauperattractedmyeyesbecauseofitsfunnyplotanditsimpressedmethodsthateducatedmanypeople.
ThePrinceandthePaupertellsthetaleoftwoboyswhotradeclothinginoneafternoonand,asaresult,theytradelivesatlast.OneistheheirtothethroneofEngland,EdwardTudor.TheotherboyisTomCanty,thesonofabeggarandthief.Coincidentally,TomCantyandEdwardTudorwereborninLondononthesameday.TomCantyisforcedbyhisfathertobeg,andheisbeatenseverelyifhereturnsempty-handed.FatherAndrewprovideshimsomerespitefromthislifebytellinghimtalesaboutthenobility.
Oneday,TomandEdwardcomeacrossbyaccident.Theyexchangeclothinganddiscoverthattheylookverymuchalike.Thentheprincerushesoutofthepalace.Edwardismockedbythecrowd,allthewhileassertingthatheisthesonoftheking.ThenEdwardwandersarounduntilheiscollaredbyJohnCanty.Inthemeantime,youngTomCantyhasbeenleftintheprince’sroyalapartmentinthepalace.Duringthattime,Tomadaptedtothiskindoflifequickly.
WhenTomenjoyedhislife,therealprincetriedtogetinthepalace.Themobbeathim.MilesHendonappearedandprotectedhim.TheprinceandHendonarestrugglingwiththecrowd.AfterthedeathofHenryVIII,TomCantyiselevatedfromprincetoking.
InHendon’srooms,theprinceactsasusualandexpectsHendontoservehim;
Hendondoessowithoutaprotest.Hendonleavestobuynewclothesforhimwhiletheprinceisstillsleeping.Whenhereturns,theprinceisluredawaybyaboywhoisafriendofTom’sfather’s.TommakesgooduseofaninterviewwithHumphreyMarlowtolearnthings;
Tomusesopportunitiestolearnandrememberimportantroyalmatters.
Theprincefallsasleeponstraw,hehearsmanytalesofinjustice.Hedeclaressuchlawsshouldbeabolishedandhewasmockedbypeople.Hetriedtoescapeandfinallyhesucceeded.Throughthisperiodhemetawomanandtwogirlswhohelpedhimandbelievedhim.AndonthewayHendonneverstoppedtofindhim.Unfortunately,hewascaughtbyTom’sfatheragainandhewasforcedtogoouttostealandHugowantedhimtobecaught.Hendonappearedandsavedtheprinceagain.
WhentheygotHendon’shome,Miles’sbrotherputthemintoprison.Theprincediscoversthepoorconditionsandinjusticeinthelaw.Finally,theyarereleasedandtheyturnbacktowardLondon.AstheprinceisreturningtoLondon,TomCantyispreparingforhiscoronationTheceremonybegins,justastheArchbishopofCanterburyisabouttoplacethecrownonTom’shead,therealprincestepsforwardandforbidsit.AnditturnsoutthatEdwardistherealprince.
AtlastMilesHendonreceivesallhisrightsthatEdwardhadpromisedtohim.AndsoareTomandhismotherandsister.Edwardamplyrewardsthosewhowerelandtohim,punishesthosewhowerenot,andmakesreparationstothosewhosufferedfromthecruelinjusticeofEnglishlaws.
III.CommentsontheBook
Iwasdeeplyfallinlovewiththisbookandthemainrolesofthisbook.Ithinktherearemanyperfectaspectsandpartsthathadbeenwrittenverywellanditdeservedustoanalysisit.
ThePrinceandthePauperisunlikeTwain’sgreaternovels,wherethereisagreatdealofcharacterdevelopment,inthisnovelthecharactersarescarcelydeveloped.ItisonTwain’singeniousplotdevices.Inthisfirstchapter,theplotbeginswiththebirthoftwoboysonthesamedayinthesametown.Oneisverypoorandunwanted,andtheotherisveryrichandverymuchdesired.
EdwardTudorspenthislifeintheconfinesofthepositionhehasdaydreamedaboutthefreedomexperiencedbyboyssuchasTomCanty.Heisveryinnocentandkindhearted.Whenhesawhispeopleunderthepressure,hewouldsavethemwithoutthinking.Heisalsoveryobstinate,nomatterhowotherpeoplelaughedathim,hestillpersistedhewastheKing.Heisverybraveandtalented,andduringhislegendaryexperience,hesavedandhelpedmanypoorpeople.Hehaddonemanythingsthathehadneverdonebefore.Duringthelifeinprison,helearnedhowtotolerantandstand.
TomCantyhasbeenbroughtupinoneofthemostdisreputablepartsofLondonandhadspentmuchtimedaydreamingaboutlivingthelifeofroyalty.Underthepressureofhisfatherandgrandmother,hehadtogoouttobegforlife,buthenevertrytostealsomething.WhenhebecametheKing,hedonemanythingstosolvepeopleproblemsandmademanylawstopeople.Atlast,hegavethepositionbacktoEdward.
MilesHendonisagoodfriendofEdwardTudor,andherepresentsthebestofEnglishmen;
hebecomeshisprotector.Heisalsoverykindhearted,justiceandintelligent.Becauseofhiskindhearted,heforgavehisbrother,becauseofhisjusticeandintelligent,hesavedandhelpedlittleprince.Andatlast,herealizedlittleEdwardisarealprince,andhereceivedwhathehaddoneforhiskindhearted.
ThePrinceandthePauperisoneofTwain'
smosttightlyplottednovels.Inaddition,thisnovelisstronglythematic.MarkTwainisparticularlyinterestedincontrastingthelivesoftherichwiththelivesofthepoor,thelivesofthenobilitywiththelivesofthelowerclasses.However,MarkTwainisalsointerestedinshowingthatapersonofnoblebirthisnotdifferentfromapersonofcommonbirth.

Therealprincemusthavelearnedalot.Atfirst,hewanttotrytobefreedom,hefinallyrealizedtheuglyfaceoftheotherpeople,theyjudgedpeopleonlybytheirappearances,sohehavesufferedmanyunexpectedsorrowsandhavedonemanydifferentthingsthathehadneverdone.Finally,hechangedtobearealman.Throughhim,Iknowexpiringdifficultiesisagoodwayforamanoutofalittleboy.Weshouldlearntothankforwhatwehavesufferedandlearntogrowupfromwhatwehavesuffered.Chanceisalwaysforthosewhopreparedwell.
TomCantywasjustaddictedtohisdaydreaming,itwasjustthevanity.Butsometimepast,hesuddenlyfeltitwasagoodfeeling.HisoriginalqualitywasraisedupandleadedhimtoreturnthepositionbacktotheKing.Powerandotherwealthythingsarenoteasilytogain.Whenyougotthehighestpower,youshoulduseittohelpthosewhoneedyourhelp.
MilesHendonisabrave,kindheartedgentleman.Whenprincewasintroubles,healwayssavedhislife.ThroughhimIthoughtalot.Kindisalwaysneedatanytimeinanywheretoanyone.Bythisrole,Ialsolearnedforgaveandtolerantagain.Remember,onegoodreturndeservesanother.
