splays.AsastudentatMunichUniversityduringWorldWarI,thedramatiststudiedtheaterandbecameinterestedinGermancabaretperformances(aformofentertainmentwithsinginganddancingthatwasperformedinrestaurantsorclubs).
Brechtbeganwritingworksforthestagearoundthistime,whichwonsomewordsofpraise.HealsospenttimestudyingtheworkofpoliticaltheoristKarlMarxandsocialism.Hebegantoformhistheoryof“epictheater.”Thistheater,differentfromthetraditionalaimsofdramaasdescribedbyAristotle,wasnotmeanttobeanimitationofrealityorawaytoentertainpeople.
Epictheaterismeanttopresentanargumentandinvitetheaudiencetomakejudgmentsonit.Traditionalconventions,likenotlookingdirectlyattheaudience,areignored.Brechttriedtopreventaudiencesfromsympathizingwithhischaracters,andwantedthemtocareabouttheissuesbeingdiscussed.
