DeeplyrootedintheSouth,Faulknerwroteabouthishometownandpeoplewithamixtureoffeelings.Usingmanyexperimentalmoderntechniques,hedepictsarealisticpictureofthedecayingSouthandshowsgreatconcerntotheproblems,(thoughheislikethemajorityofthesoutherners,reminiscent,alwaysholdingfasttotheidyllicdreams),transcendingthepictureoftheSouthintothetruthfulreflectionofmodernwesternworld.
Besideshisuniqueartistictechniques,namely,multiplepointsofview,multiplenarration,stream-of-consciousness,etc,heisacclaimedforhis“Yoknapatawpha”series—mostofhis18novelsandthreeshortstorycollectionsaresetinimaginary“Yoknapatawpha”countyand“Jefferson”town,whicharebasedonhisownhomestateandtown(MississippiandOxford).Manycharacters,peoplefromnoblefamilieswhosehistorycouldbetracedbacktothepre-Civil-Warperiod,eventhepre-colonialperiod,repeatedlyappearindifferentnovelsandstories,theirlifereflectingthedecayingoftheSouthandsomeotherproblemsthatmodernwesternworldarefacing.
