AndIamhere.(Applause.)AndIamthrilledtobehere.Iamjustsoexcited.I’veheardsuchgreatthingsaboutwhatallofyouaredoing,boththestudentsandtheteachersandthestaffhere.?
Todayisaboutwelcomingallofyou,andallofAmerica’sstudents,backtoschool,eventhoughIknowyou’vebeeninschoolforalittlebitnow.AndIcan’tthinkofabetterplacetodoitthanatMasterman.(Applause.)BecauseyouareoneofthebestschoolsinPhiladelphia.Youarealeaderinhelpingstudentssucceedintheclassroom.Justlastweek,youwererecognizedbyaNationalBlueRibbon--asaNationalBlueRibbonSchoolbecauseofyourrecordofachievement.Andthatisatestamenttoeverybodyhere–-tothestudents,totheparents,totheteachers,totheschoolleaders.It’sanexampleofexcellencethatIhopecommunitiesacrossAmericacanembrace.?
Overthepastfewweeks,MichelleandIhavebeengettingSashaandMaliareadyforschool.Andthey’reexcitedaboutit.I’llbettheyhadthesamefeelingsthatyoudo--you’realittlesadtoseethesummergo,butyou’realsoexcitedaboutthepossibilitiesofanewyear.Thepossibilitiesofbuildingnewfriendshipsandstrengtheningoldones,ofjoiningaschoolclub,ortryingoutforateam.Thepossibilitiesofgrowingintoabetterstudentandabetterpersonandmakingnotjustyourfamilyproudbutmakingyourselfproud.?
ButIknowsomeofyoumayalsobealittlenervousaboutstartinganewschoolyear.Maybeyou’remakingthejumpfromelementarytomiddleschool,orfrommiddleschooltohighschool,andyou’reworriedaboutwhatthat’sgoingtobelike.Maybeyou’restartinganewschool.You’renotsurehowyou’lllikeit,tryingtofigureouthowyou’regoingtofitin.Ormaybeyou’reasenior,andyou’reanxiousaboutthewholecollegeprocess;
aboutwheretoapplyandwhetheryoucanaffordtogotocollege.?
Andbeyondallthoseconcerns,Iknowalotofyouarealsofeelingthestrainofsomedifficulttimes.Youknowwhat’sgoingoninthenewsandyoualsoknowwhat’sgoingoninsomeofyourownfamilies.You’vereadaboutthewarinAfghanistan.Youhearabouttherecessionthatwe’vebeenthrough.Andsometimesmaybeyou’reseeingtheworriesinyourparents’facesorsenseitintheirvoice.?
Soalotofyouasaconsequence,becausewe’regoingthroughatoughtimeacountry,arehavingtoactalotolderthanyouare.Yougottobestrongforyourfamilywhileyourbrotherorsisterisservingoverseas,oryou’vegottolookafteryoungersiblingswhileyourmomisworkingthatsecondshift.Ormaybesomeofyouwhoarelittlebitolder,you’retakingonapart-timejobwhileyourdad’soutofwork.?
Andthat’salottohandle.It’smorethanyoushouldhavetohandle.Anditmaymakeyouwonderattimeswhatyourownfuturewilllooklike,whetheryou’regoingtobeabletosucceedinschool,whetheryoushouldmaybesetyoursightsalittlelower,scalebackyourdreams.?
ButIcametoMastermantotellallofyouwhatIthinkyou’rehearingfromyourprincipalandyoursuperintendent,andfromyourparentsandyourteachers:
Nobodygetstowriteyourdestinybutyou.Yourfutureisinyourhands.Yourlifeiswhatyoumakeofit.Andnothing--absolutelynothing--isbeyondyourreach,solongasyou’rewillingtodreambig,solongasyou’rewillingtoworkhard.Solongasyou’rewillingtostayfocusedonyoureducation,thereisnotasinglethingthatanyofyoucannotaccomplish,notasinglething.Ibelievethat.?
Andthatlastpartisabsolutelyessential,thatpartaboutreallyworkinghardinschool,becauseaneducationhasneverbeenmoreimportantthanitistoday.I’msuretherearegoingtobetimesinthemonthsaheadwhenyou’restayinguplatedoingyourhomeworkorcrammingforatest,oryou’redraggingyourselfoutofbedonarainymorningandyou’rethinking,oh,boy,Iwishmaybeitwasasnowday.(Laughter.)?
Butletmetellyou,whatyou’redoingisworthit.Thereisnothingmoreimportantthanwhatyou’redoingrightnow.Nothingisgoingtohaveasgreatanimpactonyoursuccessinlifeasyoureducation,howyou’redoinginschool.?
Moreandmore,thekindsofopportunitiesthatareopentoyouaregoingtobedeterminedbyhowfaryougoinschool.Thefartheryougoinschool,thefartheryou’regoingtogoinlife.Andatatimewhenothercountriesarecompetingwithuslikeneverbefore,whenstudentsaroundtheworldinBeijing,China,orBangalore,India,areworkingharderthanever,anddoingbetterthanever,yoursuccessinschoolisnotjustgoingtodetermineyoursuccess,it’sgoingtodetermineAmerica’ssuccessinthe21stcentury.?
Soyou’vegotanobligationtoyourselves,andAmericahasanobligationtoyou,tomakesureyou’regettingthebesteducationpossible.Andmakingsureyougetthatkindofeducationisgoingtotakeallofusworkinghardandallofusworkinghandinhand.?
Ittakesallofusingovernment--fromthegovernortothemayortothesuperintendenttothePresident--allofusdoingourparttoprepareourstudents,allofthem,forsuccessintheclassroomandincollegeandinacareer.It’sgoingtotakeanoutstandingprincipal,likePrincipalNeff,andoutstandingteachersliketheonesyouhavehereatMasterman--teacherswhoaregoingaboveandbeyondthecallofdutyfortheirstudents.Andit’sgoingtotakeparentswhoarecommittedtoyoureducation.?
Now,that’swhatwehavetodoforyou.That’sourresponsibility.That’sourjob.Butyou’vegotajob,too.You’vegottoshowuptoschoolontime.You’vegottopayattentioninyourclass.You’vegottodoyourhomework.You’vegottostudyforexams.You’vegottostayoutoftrouble.You’vegottoinstillasenseofexcellenceineverythingthatyoudo.Thatkindofdiscipline,thatkindofdrive,thatkindofhardwork,isabsolutelyessentialforsuccess.?
AndIcanspeakfromexperienceherebecauseunlikeKelly,Ican’tsayIalwayshadthisdiscipline.See,Icantellshewasalwaysdisciplined.Iwasn’talwaysdisciplined.Iwasn’talwaysthebeststudentwhenIwasyounger.Imademyshareofmistakes.IstillrememberaconversationIhadwithmymotherinhighschool.Iwaskindofagoof-off.AndIwasabouttheageofsomeofthefolkshere.Andmygradeswereslipping.Ihadn’tstartedmycollegeapplications.Iwasacting,asmymotherputit,sortofcasualaboutmyfuture.Iwasdoinggoodenough.IwassmartenoughthatIcouldkindofgetby.ButIwasn’treallyapplyingmyself.?
AndsoIsuspectthisisaconversationthatwillsoundfamiliartosomestudentsandsomeparentsheretoday.ShedecidedtositmedownandsaidIhadtochangemyattitude.MyattitudewaswhatIimagineeveryteenager’sattitudeiswhenyourparentshaveaconversationwithyoulikethat.Iwaslike,youknow,Idon’tneedtohearallthis.I’mdoingokay,I’mnotflunkingout.?

Buteventuallyherwordshadtheintendedeffect,becauseIgotseriousaboutmystudies.AndIstartedtomakeaneffortineverythingthatIdid.AndIbegantoseemygradesandmyprospectsimprove.?
AndIknowthatifhardworkcouldmakethedifferenceforme,thenitcanmakeadifferenceforallofyou.AndIknowthattheremaybesomepeoplewhoareskepticalaboutthat.Sometimesyoumaywonderifsomepeoplejustaren’tbetteratcertainthings.Youknow,well,I’mnotgoodatmathorI’mjustnotreallyinterestedinmyscienceclasses.?
Anditistruethatweeachhaveourowngifts,weeachhaveourowntalentsthatwehavetodiscoverandnurture.Noteverybodyisgoingtocatchonincertainsubjectsaseasilyasothers.?
Butjustbecauseyou’renotthebestatsomethingtodaydoesn’tmeanyoucan’tbetomorrow.Evenifyoudon’tthinkofyourselfasamathpersonorascienceperson,youcanstillexcelinthosesubjectsifyou’rewillingtomaketheeffort.Andyoumayfindoutyouhavetalentsyouneverdreamedof.?
