AmericanPuritanismisoneofthemostenduringshapinginfluencesinAmericanthoughtandAmericanliterature.

Theterm“puritan”wasfirstappliedtothoseProtestantreformerswhorejectedQueenElizabeth’sreligioussettlementsof1560becausetheyweredeterminedto“purify”theirreligion.

InthemediaevalEurope,therewaswidespreadreligiousrevolution.Inthe16thC,theEnglishKingHenryVIII,atthattime,theCatholicswerenotallowedtodivorceunlesstheyhavethePope’spermission.HenryVIIIwantedtodivorcehiswifebecauseshecouldn’tbearhimason.ButthePopedidn’tallowhimtodivorcebecausehiswifeisthePope’sniece.HenryVIIIbecameverydissatisfiedwiththePope,sohebrokeawayfromtheRomanCatholicChurch&
