Ibasedthestoryonalltherealthingsthathappenedinmylife.Butinsteadofpeople,thecharactersinthebookarerealanimalsfromtheGalapagosIslands,includingred-footedboobybirds(鲣鸟).Ipickedaboobybirdasthemaincharacterbecausethebirdshaveredfeetduetoavascular(血管的)condition,similartoahumanbirthmark!

Itwasreallytoughtogetmybookpublished.Ittookalongtimebecausealotofpublishersrefusedtopublishit.Theywouldsaytherewasn’tabigenoughmarketforabookaboutbirthmarks.

Butmymomnevergaveuptryingtohelpmakemydreamcometrue.Andin2005,shefinallytookherownmoneyandself-publishedBuddyBooby’sBirthmark.Afteritwaspublished,Igotlettersfromreadersallovertheworld.Theyallsharedtheirstoriesandthankedmeforsharingmine.Teacherswrotetotellmethatmybookchangedthewayclassmatestreatedeachotherandthatmybookwashelpingkidstoacceptandappreciatetheirdifferences.

Then,asmoreteachersstartedreadingmybook,Icreatedafreeglobalreadingevent,the“InternationalBuddyBooby’sBirthmarkRead—AlongforToleranceandAwareness”.

Still,Icouldnotshakeofftheice-coldimpressionthatsheputinmyheart.Truly,herjokessometimessentmeintofitsoflaughter,yetatothertimesthesejokessimplyfellflatthemomentshetoldthem.Mylovelyclass,however,wasalwaysreadytolaughattherighttimeofheramusingstories.Afterall,wewouldnotwant
