Ibasedthestoryonalltherealthingsthathappenedinmylife.Butinsteadofpeople,thecharactersinthebookarerealanimalsfromtheGalapagosIslands,includingred-footedboobybirds（鲣鸟）.Ipickedaboobybirdasthemaincharacterbecausethebirdshaveredfeetduetoavascular（血管的）condition,similartoahumanbirthmark!

Itwasreallytoughtogetmybookpublished.Ittookalongtimebecausealotofpublishersrefusedtopublishit.Theywouldsaytherewasn’tabigenoughmarketforabookaboutbirthmarks.

Butmymomnevergaveuptryingtohelpmakemydreamcometrue.Andin2005,shefinallytookherownmoneyandself-publishedBuddyBooby’sBirthmark.Afteritwaspublished,Igotlettersfromreadersallovertheworld.Theyallsharedtheirstoriesandthankedmeforsharingmine.Teacherswrotetotellmethatmybookchangedthewayclassmatestreatedeachotherandthatmybookwashelpingkidstoacceptandappreciatetheirdifferences.
