Introduction

TheIMOSecretariatgeneratesavastamountofinformationtoensuresafe,secure,efficientandenvironmentallyfriendlyseas.

Over6000documentsandalargenumberofpublicationsareproducedeveryyear.Findingone’swaythroughIMOdocumentationisnomeanfeatandoftencanbetimeconsumingandfrustrating.Therearecodes,resolutions,recommendations,circulars,circularletters,notesverbales,certifiedcopiesandaplethoraofinformation!

TheMaritimeKnowledgeCentrehaspreparedthisinformationpaperwithaviewtohelpingyounavigatethroughthejargonandgetbetteracquaintedwiththedocumentation.

Itishopedthatnewdelegates,researchers,studentsandmembersofthepublicalikewillfindithelpful.

IMOdocuments

AdocumentisatextsubmittedtoaprincipalorganorasubsidiaryorganoftheIMOforitsconsideration,usuallyinconnectionwithitem（s）onitsagenda. 

Typicallythedocumentcomprisesvariouselements.（SeeFigure1intheannex）

TheIMODocumentsSection,partoftheConferenceDivision,isresponsibleforthedisseminationofdocumentstoIMOMemberStates,UNAgencies,NGO’sandIGO’sparticipatingtomeetings. 

TheSectionisresponsiblefortheoverallproductionchainfromreceiptofdraft,throughtranslationandtyping,tofinalprintedformanddistribution.ItisalsoresponsibleforprovidingpapersinelectronicformviaIMODOCS（moreonthisbelow）.

Alldocumentscarryadocumentsymbol（moreonthisbelow）.

IMOdocumentscontainingproposedamendmentstoCodes,conventionsetc.arenormallyprintedonpinkpaper.

MaritimeKnowledgeCentre-collectionofdocumentsinprintedform

TheMaritimeKnowledgeCentreiscustodianofthecollectionofIMOdocuments,producedsince1959. 

TheyareavailableinEnglishandFrenchfrom1959andinSpanishfrom1985. 

ReportsofthemainCommitteesarealsotranslatedintoArabic,ChineseandRussian. 

TheMaritimeKnowledgeCentreretainsonehardcopyofalldocumentsandtheirattachmentsinallavailablelanguages.Theyarenotavailableforlending.

Microfichecollection

AllIMOdocumentsproducedsince1959arealsoavailableinmicroficheformupto1996inEnglish,FrenchandSpanish.ThereportsoftheMainCommitteesarealsoavailableonmicroficheinRussian,ChineseandArabic. 

ThemicrofichescontaintheattachmentssubmittedbyMemberStatesandotherbodiesaccredited（IGO’sandNGO’s）aswellastheworkingpapers.

IMOdocumentsgoingbackto1998areavailableinPDFformatinEnglish,FrenchandSpanishviatheIMOwebsiteintheIMODOCSdatabase.SomedocumentsareavailableinRussian,ArabicandChineseAttachmentsarenotincludedbutcanbeconsultedintheMaritimeKnowledgeCentre.IMODOCSismanagedbytheDocumentsSectionandcomprisesapublicpartandarestrictedpartwhichisonlyaccessibletoIMOMemberGovernments,Intergovernmentalagencies,andorganisationsinconsultativestatuswithIMO;

somedocumentsarenotavailableonthepublicdatabase（workingpapers,documentsforthecurrentsessionofameeting/conferenceandCouncildocuments.

AlIMOdocumentsproducedinEnglishbetween1959and1998canbefoundintheIMOArchives,adatabasealsomanagedbytheDocumentsSection,ConferencesDivision.

MostoftheIMOcircularsissuedoverthepastfewyearsareaccessibleinternallyonthenetwork（inE/F/SandmainCommitteereportsalsoinA/C/R）andonthepublicwebsite（Englishonly）.TheMaritimeKnowledgeCentremaintainstheNumericalListofMSCCircularsandMEPCcirculars（Englishonly）online;
