sneighbors,thencity-livingorsuburbiaistheplacetobe.Socializingwithneighborsinthesuburbscansometimesincurunpleasantconsequences;

Inthecitythereismoreofeverything.Morejobs,morefood,moretransportation,availabilityofservices.Citiesharborbetterdoctors,medicalcareandcheaperconsumergoodsbecausethereiscompetition.Inthecountry,ifyoudon'

tliketheprices,toobad.Whatyouseeiswhatyouget.Ifyoulikepeanutbutterandthereareonlythreebottlesleftontheshelves,buyallthreebecausethenexttime,theshelvesmaybebare.Aswithcountryhospitals,anewonehasbeenbuilt,butwithlesserservices.Thenegativeofrural-livingisnoteveryprofessional,suchasadoctorwanttopracticeinthecountry.

Inthecountry,everyoneisversatileandonemustlearntobeself-sufficient.Thefirechiefmaybeanelectricianandwhosejobissometimescutshortwhenheiscalledawaytoafireemergency.Acountrydwellermaypaymoreforhouseinsurancebecausethenearestfirehydrantisnowheretobeseenorfound.

Countrylivingisfoodforthesoulandquietandsolitudearegreatforthesoul.Havingtheopportunitytowakeuptobeautifulsunrises;

nothavingtoshowereveryday,hangingclothesonaclotheslinearewhatdefinecountrylife.Walkingaroundinrubberduckiesisafashionstateinthecountryasroadstendtobewetandmuddywheneveritrains.

Incottagecountrywherethiswriterlives,thepopulationtriplesduringthesummerandtricklestoafewhundredinthefall,becomingonceagainasleepylittlecommunity.Itissoquiet,peace,tranquility,andbeingatonewithnaturethatdrawsmanypeopletothecountry.

IliveinatownjustintheoutskirtsofLondonsoasyoucanimagineI'

malwaysinandoutofthemagical,bigcity.Yes,soithasitsdownpoints;

thefactthatthere'

salwaysawaveofpollutionhittingyouassoonasyougetoutofyourcarorthetrain.Thefactthatpeoplearesobusythattheybrushpastyou,hammeringyourshoulderhardandnoteventurningbacktoapologize.Andalsothefactthatifyoudon'

tholdotoyourhandbagproperly,itwillgetknockedoff/stolenandneverbefoundagain.

But...whenyoulookatthebiggerpicturethereisnoplaceIwouldratherbein.Theexcitementthrillsmeofbeingsomewherewhereeverydayisanewadventure-whereeverydayyouencounterpeopleyouhavenevermetbeforewhosuddenlybecomelife-longfriends.

IknowafewpeopleinNottingHill,whodespitehavinggonetothebestschoolinEnglandandlivinginthemostfantastichouses,theycertainlybreakthestereotypeasthe'

richkids'

.Theyarefun-loving,wonderful,kind,crazy,loudandIknowthatifIweretoeverhaveaproblemtheywouldcertainlybethereforme.

IalsoknowquiteafewpeopleinChiswickhavinglivedtherefor3monthsanddespitebeingfun-loving,wonderfulandkind,theyarealsointenselyquiet,smartandabsolutelyperfectforparadingthroughmuseumsortheaters.

mwritingunfairlyconsideringthatthemostIhavespentinthecountrysidewasthetotalof6dayswherethewholeclasswasmadetogobytheBiologyteachersaspartofafieldtrip.Itwashorrible（tomeanyway）.TherewerenoshopsformilesandassoonasIemergedmyheadoutofthewindow,theonlythingIcouldseeweresoggy,greenfieldsandthesmellofcowdungwhichpermeatedtheairandtheonlythingIlikedaboutitwasthatIcouldwearmybrandnewblackwithpinkspotswellies（whichaweeklaterwereamaindisplayattheBentallscentreinKingston）.NotonlythatbuttheonlymemoryIhaveofthetripwaswalkingforwhatseemedlikemilesandmilesjusttogettotheseaside.
