Thecoursewillconsistofreadings,somelookingandlisteningassignments,classdiscussionandpresentations,visitstovariousexhibits,concerts,andperformances,andregularwritingassignments,bothgradedandungraded.Gradedassignmentsincludetwoshortessaysincriticismandthepreparationofatermprojectinphilosophicalaesthetics,tobedesignedinconsultationwiththeinstructor.Ungradedassignmentsincludefiveeventreports,areadingresponsepapereveryweek,andvariousin-classwritingexercises.Yourgradewillbebasedonthequalityofyourcriticalessays(40%),thequalityandregularityofyourclassparticipationandreadingresponses(13%),yourattendanceatfiveevents,eachdocumentedbyaonepageresponse(10%),andthequalityofyourfinalproject(37%).

CoursePolicies:

Inmyidealeducationalworld,therewouldbenogrades.Teacherstudentrelationshipswouldbevoluntary,andtheywouldbeindividuallynegotiatedaccordingtotheinterestsofthestudentandtheprofessor.Wedon'

tliveinthatworld.Intheworldwherewedolive,Ifindthefollowingpolicies,tobenecessary,andIexpectyoutoadheretothem.

Youmustmeetalldeadlinesandcompleteallassignments.Misseddeadlinesmaybepenalizedbyasmuchasalettergrade.Papersmorethanaweeklatewillnotbeacceptedunlessyouhavenegotiatedanextensioninadvance.Finalprojectswillnotbeacceptedwithoutpriorreviewofaroughdraft.

Iexpectregularattendance,bothatclasssessionsandatourfirstFridayexcursion,andothersuchevents.*Theclassneedsyourcontribution,andyouneedthediscussionsandexperiencesthathappenwhenwemeet.Youareallowedthreeabsences;

afterthatyourparticipationgradewillsuffer.Meanwhile,pleasemakeeveryefforttosubmityourworkontimeevenifyoumustbeabsent.AllworkmustbesumittedelectronicallythroughBlackboard.Idon'

tneedhardcopyunlessyouarehavingtroublewithBlackboard,andeventhenIpreferthatyoue-mailyourpapertome.

CourseOutline:

Thecoursewilldevelopalongseveralaxessimultaneously.Wewillpayattentiontoseveralarts,namelypaintingandsculpture(aboutfourweeksworth);

music(alsofourweeks);

andamixtureoftheateranddance,photographyandfilm,andfictionandpoetryduringtheremainingweeksofthesemester.Wewillview,read,orlistentoparticularworks(includingstudentworks),andwewilldiscussissuesinphilosophicalaestheticsandthephilosophyoftheartsraisedbytheworksorthemediatheyrepresent.Wewillalsoreadanddiscussessaysbyseveralphilosophersandcriticsaboutthearts.Wewilldiscussanumberoftopics,includingthoseraisedbythelistofquestionsonthelastpage.WewillattendFirstFridayinPhiladelphia'

sgallerydistrictonFebruary6th,andmayattendsomeconcertsandotherartsevents.Wewillalsohaveanin-classconcert,andsomeguests.

Ourtopicfortheintroductorysessions(1/21and1/26)istherelationbetweentheuniversalelementscommoninthearts,whichoftenearnsthemthenameofauniversallanguage,andthehistoricalandsocialoriginsofourcommondistinctionsbetween"

fineart"

andotherarts(craft,popularart,commercialartanddesign,entertainment,etc.).Thesedistinctionsandthebaggagethatcomeswiththemarefundamentaltothemodernideaofart.Ratherthanargueaboutwhethertoacceptthem,wewilllookattheirhistoricaloriginandsocialfunction.Nextweek,wewilldiscussthetopicsofartasrepresentationandofartandmorality.

Gradedassignments:

-Twocriticalessays,eachonsomeworkofartthatinterestsyou.Eachofthesewillbesubmittedasaroughdraft.You'

llreceivecommentsfrommeandtwoclassmates,andhandinafinaldraftaboutaweeklater.Ipreferthatyouwriteaboutsomethingnew,thatdoesn'
