  Theapplicationofbiotechnologytoenergyproductionseemsevenmorepromising.In1996thefamousscience,fictionwriter,ArthurC.Clarke,manyofwhosepreviouspredictionshavecometrue,saidthatwemaysoonbeabletodevelopremarkablycheapandrenewablesourcesofenergy.Someofthesepowersourceswillbebiological.Clarkeandothershavewarnedusrepeatedlythatsoonerorlaterwewillhavetogiveupourdependenceonnon-renewablepowersources.Coal,oilandgasareindeedconvenient.However,usingthemalsomeanscreatingdangerouslyhighlevelsofpollution.Itwillbeimpossibletomeetthegrowingdemandforenergywithoutincreasingthatpollutiontocatastrophic(灾难性的)levelsunlesswedeveloppowersourcesthatarebothcheaperandcleaner.
