PurchasesfromChinaaremorepopularwithyoungerpeopleandwomen,whilepurchasesfromGermanyreceivewarmerwelcomebymenandtheelderly,theinternationalstudyfound.

OnlinemarketplacessuchasAInc,eBayIncandAlibabaGroupHoldingsLtdwerethemostsought-afteravenuesforbuyersfromalmostallcountries,accountingforaroundtwo-thirdsofallcross-borderpurchases,thestudysaid.

Thesurveyalsoindicatedthatclearinformationaboutdeliverycharges,freereturnsandfreedeliveryoveraparticularvalue,werethemostimportantdriversforcross-borderonlineshoppers.

Itfoundthatconsumersweremorelikelytopayapremiumfortrackingratherthanforspeedofdelivery.Theypreferredtopayfordeliveryofatrackeditemthattookfivetoeightdaysfordeliverythananuntrackeditemthattookthreetofourdays.

About70percentofcross-borderonlineshopperswereofferedtrackingand88percentusedit,mostlyintheinterimstage,tocheckondeliveryprogress.

Almostthree-quartersofshoppersusedthepostfortheirmostrecentcross-borderpurchases.Overall,87percentweresatisfiedwiththeirdeliveryexperience.Only6percentreturnedtheircross-borderpurchase,mostlyusingthepostforthereturn.

Theyfoundthatforeveryincreaseof10microgramsofairpollutioninacubicmeterofair,themortalityrateincreasedby0.22percent,discountingdeathsfromaccidents.

ProfessorFrankKelly,anexpertinenvironmentalhealthatKing’sCollegeLondon,whowasnotinvolvedinthestudybuthasstudiedairpollutioninChina,toldTheIndependent:

“ThoserelativerisksareconsiderablylessthanthoseseeninEuropeandtheUS.Formortality(死亡率)inEuropeweareworkingonasixpercentincreaseper10micrograms.”ThatsuggestsairpollutioninEuropeisabout27timesmoretoxicthanaverageairpollutioninChina.

However,ProfessorKellysaidcitieslikeBeijing,ShanghaiandHongKongwerelikelytosufferfromWestern-styleairpollution."

Thenaturaldustcomponentthereisnotofthemagnitudethatitwoulddwarfthecoal,biomassandfossilfuelsignals,”hesaid,“Thatmaybetrueincertaincitieswhosepollutionisnotdominatedbylocalpowergenerationormajortrafficcongestion.”

Naturaldustparticlescancausephysicaldamagetothelungsandtriggeranasthmaattack.Particlesofcarbonproducedwhenfossilfuelsareburnedcanleadtosimilarproblemsbuttheyarealsocoatedwithtoxicheavymetals,chemicalsandvolatileorganiccompounds.Theseareabletopassfromthelungsintothebloodstreamwhereitisthoughttheycausefurtherdamagetothebody.

AreebaHamid,anairpollutioncampaignerwithenvironmentalgroupGreenpeace,said:

“Poisonousaircausesdamagetopeople’shealthwhereverintheworldtheylive.Wenowknowfumesfromdiesel(柴油机)vehiclesarealotmorepoisonousthancarcompaniesclaimedandthisisabigcauseofairpollutioninEuropeandNorthAmerica.Thesecompanieshavealottoanswerfor,butsofarthey’vemanagedtoavoidanyrealaccountability.”

ThestudyofcitiesinChinafoundtheaverageannualexposetoPM2.5was56microgramspercubicmeter,comparedtotheWHOguidelinelimitforsafeairqualityof10micrograms.

Peoplewhowereolderthan75,hadlesseducationorwholivedinhotterplacesweremorelikelytodie.Itisthoughtpeopleinwarmercitiesweremorelikelytospendtimeoutsideorleavetheirwindowsopen,therebybreathingmorepollutedair,theresearcherssaid.Theyalsospeculatedthatlesswelleducatedpeoplemighthavepooreraccesstohealthcareorexperiencepoorerenvironmentalhealthconditions.
