StandardGermanisaWestGermaniclanguageandiscloselyrelatedtoandclassifiedalongsideEnglish,Dutch,andtheFrisianlanguages.Toalesserextent,itisalsorelatedtotheEast(extinct)andNorthGermaniclanguages.MostGermanvocabularyisderivedfromtheGermanicbranchoftheIndo-Europeanlanguagefamily.[3]GermaniswrittenusingtheLatinalphabet.GermandialectsaredistinguishedfromvarietiesofstandardGerman.GermandialectsaretraditionallocalvarietiesandaretracedbacktothedifferentGermantribes.

GermanphilosophershavehelpedshapewesternphilosophyfromasearlyastheMiddleAges.Later,LeibnizandmostimportantlyKantplayedcentralrolesinthehistoryofphilosophy.KantianisminspiredtheworkofSchopenhauerandNietzscheaswellasGermanidealismdefendedbyFichteandHegel.MarxandEngelsdevelopedcommunisttheoryinthesecondhalfofthe19thcenturywhileHeideggerandGadamerpursuedthetraditionofGermanphilosophyinthe20thcentury.AnumberofGermanintellectualswerealsoinfluentialinsociology,mostnotablyAdorno,Habermas,Horkheimer,Luhmann,Simmel,Tö
nnies,andWeber.TheUniversityofBerlinfoundedin1810bylinguistandphilosopherWilhelmvonHumboldtservedasaninfluentialmodelforanumberofmodernwesternuniversities.
