Abstract
HermanMelvillehasbeenconsideredasoneofthegreatestwritersinAmericanliteratureofthe19thcentury.Thesuccessofthismasterpieceislargelyattributedtoitsadoptionofsymbolism.Inlightofthis,itisbothpenetratingandcomprehensivetostudysymbolismandtoexplorethesymbolicelementsinMobyDicksoastobringaboutadeeperunderstandingoftheauthor'spenetrationintohumanityandliberalism.
Atthebeginningofthethesis,abriefintroductiontotheauthor,HermanMelvilleandMobyDickispresentedsoastopavethewayforfurtherexploration.Inthefollowingpart,thefocusisputontheanalysisofsymbolisminbothbroadsenseandnarrowsense.Itbeginswiththeanalysisofsymbol,whichisanimportantmeansofsymbolism.Furthermore,theoriesconcerningsymbolismareputforward,andintheend,thefunctionsofsymbolisminliteraturearedisplayedtofull.ThenextthreepartsbringthethesistohighlightbyprobingintothesymbolismofMobyDick,thewhitewhale,whostandsforevil,Godandnaturefromdifferentperspectives.ThethesisendswithreiteratingthesignificanceofsymbolismadoptedinMobyDick.
