TheGovernmenthasalmostdoubleditsspendingoncomputereducationinschools.Mr.WilliamShelton,juniorEducationMinister,announcedthattheMicroelectronicsEducationProgram(MEP)istorunfortwomoreyearswithadditionalfundingofatleast£20million.

Theprogrambeganin1980,wasoriginallyduetoendnextyear,andhadabudgetof£9million.Thishasbeenraisedinbitsandpiecesoverthepastyearto£11million.ThegovernmentwillnowrununtilMarch1986,ataprovisionalcostofaround£20million.

MEPprovidescoursesforteachersanddevelopscomputerprogramsforclassroomuseofpersonalcomputers.ItisruninpartnershipwithaDepartmentofIndustryprogramunderwhichBritish-madepersonalcomputersaresuppliedtoschoolsathalfprice.

Inthatway,virtuallyeverysecondaryschoolhasbeenprovidedwithatleastonecomputeratacentralcosttothetaxpayerofunder£5million.Theprimaryschoolsarenowbeingsuppliedina£9millionprogramwhichgotunderwayattheturnoftheyear.
