Soccermightbethemostpopularsportintheworld,butfordecades,Americanshavemanagedtoresistitscharm.Theirattentionhasbeenfocused,ofcourse,onthebigthreeAmericansports:
baseball,footballandbasketball.AndwhilesoccerisrapidlygainingpopularityamongyoungerAmericans,theoldergenerationremainsdetachedfromthegame,evenwhentherestoftheworldisgluedtoTVscreenswatchingthe2006WorldCupmatches.
It’snotasthoughsoccerisastrangertoAmericanshores.TheU.S.nationalsoccerteamplayedinthefirstWorldCupin1930.Butfromthestart,thegamehadanimageformanyAmericansasanimmigrantsport.StillsoccerbegantoattractmoreattentionintheUnitedStatesafterthe1974WorldCup.
