(3)Thenatureofthehorrorstoryisbestindicatedbythetitleofthe1990stelevisionseriesTalesfromtheDarkSide.Humanbeingshavealwaysacknowledgedthatthereisevilintheworldandadarksidetohumannaturethatcannotbeexplainedexceptperhapsinreligiousterms.Thisevilmaybeimaginedashavinganalmostunlimitedpowertoinspireanxiety,fear,dread,andterrorinadditiontodoingactualphysicalandmentalharm.

(6)Muchhorrorliteratureisgroundedinsuperstition,fearofdemons,andthedreadofdeath.Nosingletalebringsalloftheseelementstogethersowellasthevampirelegend,anancientfolksuperstition.Thevampireisdescribedasundead,anentombedindividualwhoriseseachnighttofeedonthebloodoftheliving.InliteratureitsbestrepresentationisDracula(1897)byBramStoker.ThelegendwasretoldinInterviewwiththeVampire(1976)byAnneRice.TheDraculastorywaseagerlytakenupbyHollywoodinthe1931filmthatstarredBelaLugosi,andnumerousmoviesonthethemehavebeenmadesince.
(7)Similartothevampirelegendisthestoryofthewolfman,thehumanbeingunderacursewhoturnsintoahalfman,halfwolfpresumablywhenthemoonisfull.Thiscreatureprowlsaround,devouringanimals,people,orcorpses,buthereturnstohumanformbyday.AswithDracula,thewolfmanbecameapopularsubjectformovies,beginningwithTheWerewolfofLondon(1935)andthewolfmanfilmsofthe1940s.Accordingtoonesuperstitionthewerewolf,afterbeingkilled,turnsintoavampire.
(8)Thebeliefthatthedeadcanreturntohauntandharmthelivinghaslongbeenanelementoffiction.GhoststoriesareatleastasoldastheBible:
intheOldTestament,KingSaulcallsuptheghostofSamueltoforetelltheoutcomeofabattle.InShakespeare’sHamlet,theghostoftheslainkingprovidestheinformationfromwhichHamletplotsrevengeforhisfather’smurder.OneofthemastersofthemodernghoststorywasAmbroseBierce,someofwhosestorieswerecollectedinGhostandHorrorStoriesofAmbroseBierce(1964).Avariationontheghostthemeisthehauntedhouse,aboutwhichhundredsofstorieshavebeenwritten.
(9)Betweenthevampiresandtheghostsarecreaturescalledthelivingdeadandzombieswhoreturnfromthegravetodevourtheliving.HollywoodcelebratedthisstoryinNightoftheLivingDead(1968)andotherfilms.InliteratureoneofthebestexamplesistheintriguingbookTheBeastwithFiveFingers(1928;
