ThisisthestoryofasturdyAmericansymbolwhichhasnowspreadthroughoutmostoftheworld.Thesymbolisnotthedollar.ItisnotevenCoca-Cola.Itisasimplepairofpantscalledbluejeans,andwhatthepantssymbolizeiswhatAlexisdeTocquevillecalled“amanlyandlegitimatepassionforequality…”Bluejeansarefavoredequallybybureaucratsandcowboys,bankersanddeadbeats,fashiondesignersandbeerdrinkers.Theydrawnodistinctionsandrecognizenoclasses;

theyaremerelyAmerican.Yettheyaresoughtafteralmosteverywhereintheworld.Theyhavebeenaroundforalongtime,anditseemslikelythattheywilloutliveeventhenecktie.

ThisubiquitousAmericansymbolwastheinventionofaBavarian-bornJew.HisnamewasLeviStrauss.

HewasborninBadOcheim,Germany,in1829,andduringtheEuropeanpoliticaldisorderof1848decidedtotakehischancesinNewYork,towhichhistwobrothersalreadyhademigrated.Fortwoyearshewasalowlypeddler,haulingsundries(杂货)door-to-doortoekeout(维持)ahand-to-mouthliving.WhenamarriedsisterinSanFranciscoofferedtopayhiswayWestin1850,hejumpedattheopportunity,takingwithhimboltsofcanvashehopedtosellformakingtents.

Itwasthewrongkindofcanvasforthatpurpose,butwhiletalkingwithaminer,helearnedthatpants–sturdypantsthatwouldstanduptotherigorsofthediggings–werealmostimpossibletofind.Opportunitybeckoned.Onthespot,Straussmeasuredtheman’swaistandinseamwithapieceofstringand,forsixdollarsingolddust,hadthecanvastailoredintoapairofstiffbutruggedpants.Theminerwasdelightedwiththeresult,wordgotaroundabout“thosepantsofLevi’s,”andStrausswasinbusiness.Thecompanyhasbeeninbusinesseversince.

WhenStraussranoutofcanvas,hewrotehistwobrotherstosendmore.Hereceivedinsteadarough,browncottonclothmadeinNimes,France––calledsergedeNimesandswiftlyshortenedto“denim”(theword“jeans”derivesfromGenes,theFrenchwordforGennoa,whereasimilarclothwasproduced).Almostfromthefirst,Strausshadhisclothdyedthedistinctiveindigothatgavebluejeanstheirname,butitwasnotuntilthe1870sthatheaddedthecopperrivets(铆钉)whichhavelongsincebecomeacompanytrademark.

Overthefollowingyearsthecompanyprosperedlocallyandbythetimeofhisdeathin1902,StrausshadbecomeamanofprominenceinCalifornia.Forthreedecadesthereafterthebusinessremainedprofitablethoughsmall.Fromacompanywithfifteensalespeople,twoplants,andalmostnobusinesseastofMississippiin1946,theorganizationgrewinthirtyyearstoincludeasalesforceofmorethantwenty-twothousand,withfiftyplantsandofficesinthirty-fivecountries.Eachyear,morethan250,000,000itemsofLevi’sclothingaresold–includingmorethan83,000,000pairsofrivetedbluejeans.Theyhavebecome,throughmarketing,wordofmouth,anddemonstrablereliability,thecommonpantsofAmerica.Theycanbepurchasedpre-washed,pre-faded,andpre-shrunkforthesuitablyproletarianlook.

Thepantshavebecomeatradition,andalongthewayhaveacquiredahistoryoftheirown.Therewas,forexample,theWyomingmanwhousedhisjeansasatwo-ropetohaulhiscaroutofaditch.Andthenthereistheparticularlyterrifyingstoryofthecarelessconstructionworkerwhodangledfifty-twostoriesabovethestreetuntilrescued,hissolesupporttheLevi’sbeltloopthroughwhichhisropewashooked.
