ThelatestdesigniscalledCaveCrawler.It’sabitsmallerthanGroundhog,andevenmoreadvanced.Itcantakephotosandvideosandhasmoresensorsthatcandetectthepresenceofdangerousgases.Incredibly,therobothasarealsenseoflogic.Ifitcomesacrossanobstacleitgetsmomentarilyconfused.Ithastothinkaboutwhattodoandwheretogonext.Sometimesitthrowsafitjustlikearealperson.

Thegreatestproblem,though,iscost.Themoneyoftheearliestresearchprojectwasprovidedbythegovernment,butthatmoneyhaddriedup,andit’snotclearwherefuturemoneywillcomefrom.Partlyforthatreason,andpartlybecauseofadvancesinsafety,miningisnotnearlyasdangerousasitwasinthepast.Since1990,fatalities(致命性)havedeclinedby67%andinjuriesby51%,accordingtotheNationalMiningAssociation.
