Nonetheless,beyondAmerica’sgloomytrendisamoreoptimisticstory:
thatatagloballevel,suicideisdownby29%since2000.Asaresult,2.8mliveshavebeensavedinthattime—threetimesasmanyashavebeenkilledinbattle.Thereisnoonereason.Itishappeningatdifferentratesamongdifferentgroupsindifferentplaces.
Whyarepeoplenowlesslikelytotaketheirownlives?
Urbanizationandgreaterfreedomhavehelped.Accountsofthosewhoattemptsuicide,andoftherelativesofthosewhosucceed,suggestthatmanyyoungAsianwomenweredriventodespairbyviolenthusbandsandoverbearingin-laws.Aspeoplemovetocitiesandthegripoftraditionloosens,womenhavemorechoiceaboutwhomtheymarryorlivewith,makinglifemorebearable.Leavingthevillagehelpsinanotherway,too.Becausefarminginvolveskillingthings,ruralfolkarelikeliertohavethemeanstokillthemselves—guns,pesticides—tohand.
Effortstocontrolaccesstothemeanstokilloneselfcanhelp,too.Suicideissurprisinglyimpulsive.AstudyofyoungChinesewomenwhohadtriedtokillthemselvesshowedthatthree-fifthshadbeencontemplatingsuicideforlessthantwohours,andoneintenforlessthanaminute.Of515peoplewhohadsurvivedtheleapfromSanFrancisco’sGoldenGateBridgebetween1937and1971,94%werestillalivein1978—whichsuggeststhatasuicidepostponedislikelytobeasuicideprevented.
