NowadaystheOpenUniversityinBritainplaysanimportantroleinBritisheducation.

In1963,theLabourPartyputforwardanewideaforeducation.Itwasaplanfora“universityintheair”.Thisuniversitywouldmakeuseoftelevision,radioandcorrespondencecoursestogiveeducationalopportunitytopeoplewhodidnothaveachancetogotouniversity,butmanypeoplelaughedattheideaatthattime.

By1969theplanwaswelladvancedandbyAugust1970theOpenUniversity,asitisnowcalled,hadreceivedfortythousandapplications.However,onlytwenty-fivethousandofthemwereaccepted.InJanuary1971,manyclerks,farmworkers,housewives,teachers,policemenattendedthefirstclassovertheradiooronTV.Meanwhilestudycentresweresetupalloverthecountrysothatstudentscouldspendoneweekayearatoneoftheuniversity’ssummerschools.
