Thedevelopmentprocessi.e.assumptions,construction,simulationsandanalysisofacontrolstrategyforthehybriddriveofthevehiclemountedaerialworkplatformispresentedinthepaper.Particularattentionispaidtothedevelopmentofthecontrolsystemstrategyensuringappropriateenergyrecuperationbymakinguseofenergystoredintheelectrochemicalform.Thecontrolstrategyisbuiltuparoundtheconceptofbilevelhierarchiccontrolsystem.Theelevationcontroloftheaerialworkplatformisassumedastheprimarygoalofthecontrolsystem.Thesecondarygoalofthecontrolsystemisformulatedintermsoftrackingandkeepingthechargingleveloftherechargeableelectrochemicalaccumulatorinpredefinedlimits.AcontrolsystemsimulationmodelisdevelopedinMatlab-Simulinkenvironment.Exemplaryresultsofcontrolsystemsimulationsareshownontheexampleofahydraulicpowerunitdrivingaerialworkplatformmountedon
specialvehicleMONTRAKS.
1.Introduction
Thereductionofvehicleemissionhasbeenanobjectiveofresearchformanyyears;
partlyitisforcedbyincreasinglystringentenvironmentallegislation.TheKyotoprotocol,whichwasadoptedattheCOP3inDecember1997,isaimedtodecreasethegreenhousegasemissions(GHG)byanaverageof5%referringto1990levels.ItcameintoforceonFebruary16,2005followingitsratificationbyRussia.
HybridsystemsarenowgainingattentionasameansforreducingGHGemissionsbyimprovingfueleconomyandenergyeficiency.
Marketforhybriddrivenvehiclesisgrowingupdynamicallysincemanyyears.Contemporary,elevenlargecarmanufacturersusetodeliverortointensivelydevelophybriddrivenvehicles.Eventhatismainlyfocusingonpassengercarssegment,itshouldbestressedthattheremarkableeffortisundertakentoimplementhybriddrivesinthetrucks,deliveryvansandbuses[1,2].
WestStart-CALSTART[3],anadvancedtransportationtechnologiesconsortium,supportedbyU.S.ArmyNationalAutomotiveCenter(NAC),organizedthepilotprogramaspartofitsHybridTruckUsersForum(HTUF™)program,tospeedupandtoassisthybridcommercialization.AccordingtotheforecastselaboratedbyCALSTART,thehybriddriventrucksmarketsharewillgrowreachingca9%in2010andnear18.5%in2020.
Stillheavydutymachinesandspecialpurposevehiclesaretheobjectofpossibleimplementationforhybriddrivesolution.Howevertherearesomedoubts,ifthatapplicationiseconomicallyfeasible.Consideringpassengercars,inrespectofenvironmentalregulations,importantroleplaysthe“effectofthescale”.Incaseofheavydutymachines,aerialworkplatforms,pickandcarrymobilecranesorspecialvehicleswithliftequipment,theapplicationofhybridsolutionisdrivenwithoperatingconstrainsandapplication.
Formanycases,workingconditionsforthatclassofmachinerystronglylimitsoreveneliminatestheapplicationofcombustionengines.Inparticularthatiscaseofclosedspaceareassuchasfactoryshops,warehouses,intrinsicallysafezones,etc.Heretheimplementationofdiesel-electricdrivescouldconsiderablyextendpossibleuseofthatkindofequipment.Veryuniqueandontheothersidecommonareaofservicesismunicipalservicesandworksusedtobeprocessedduringnightinthehighlypopulatedzones(streetsprayer-sweepers,garbagetrucks,tramwaytractionnetworksservicevehicles,etc.).Itisoftenreportedbymunicipalities,thattheissuetobesolvedforthatservicesisthelevelofnoisegeneratedbydieselengine.
Anexampleonhowtomeettheever-increasingregulationscontrollingenvironmentalconditionsduringindoorliftingoperationsisthebatterypoweredcraneslinedesignedbyVallaCorporation[4],whichrecentlyextendedtheofferforhybridsolution.AnotherexampleisahybridsysteminvestigatedbyEatonCorporation[5,6]formediumtruckswithoptionalaerialworkplatformequipment.Eatonbegancommercializingitsmedium-dutyhybridsysteminAugust2007inawidevarietyofapplicationssucha:
telecommunicationsandmunicipality,citydelivery,refuse,citytransitbus,pickandcarryandsoon.
Ahybridvehicleisdefinedasonethathasmorethanonesourceofpower.Severaldifferenttypesofhybridsolutionshavebeenconsideredinthepastandarestillundergoingextensiveresearch,

suchasHybridElectricVehicles(HEVs)[1],whichuseamotor/generatorandbatterypacks(orotherelectricalstoragedevices)andmechanicalhybri
