1.Introduction
Withtheglobalizationoftheworld,Englishhasbecomeauniversallanguage,anditactsasamediumforpeopleofdifferentnations.Englishisoftennecessaryforofficialbusiness,education,internationaltradeandotheractivitiesinmanycountries.Thus,tohaveagoodunderstandingoftheworld,itisnecessaryforustolearnEnglish.
Englishconsistsofspeechsound,grammaticalstructureandvocabulary.TohaveagoodcommandofEnglish,itisindispensableforustohavebetteracquisitionofvocabulary.TolearnEnglishistobuildanewnetworkwhichisexpressedbyvocabulary.AlloftheseleadtothefactthatvocabularyformstheverybackbonetoEnglishlearners.Grammarprovidestheoverallpatterns,andvocabularyisthematerialtoputinthepatterns.AsDavidWilkinssaid,“Withoutgrammarverylittlecanbeconveyed,withoutvocabularynothingcanbeconveyed.”(citedinThornburyScott,2003:

Inspiteofthis,itseemstostudentsthatitisverydifficulttomastervocabulary,becausethegrammar-translationmethodhasagreatimpactontheformationofstudents’studyhabit.Studentsactaccordingtowhattheteacherwantsthemtoaccomplishbutnotwhattheythemselveswanttoaccomplish,sothescopeoftheirknowledgeisnarrowandtheircommandofvocabularyislimited.Besides,thelong-termpracticeofteacher-centerednessineducationhasactuallylessenedtheopportunitiesforstudentstoanalyzethingsforthemselves,hasharmedstudents’initiativeandhasreducedtheirenthusiasmforlearningvocabulary.Asaresult,thestudentswhohavelearntmorethansixyearsofEnglishareoftenremaindeficientinusingthelanguageinrealcommunicativesituations.
Enablestudentstohaveagoodmasteryofvocabularyandforestertheircommunicativecompetenceinseniorhighschools,communicativeapproachmaybeabettersubstitute.Vocabularyteachingthroughthismethodcantrainanddevelopstudents’linguisticcompetenceandtheircommunicativecompetence,andmoreopportunitiesareprovidedforlearnerstopracticeusingnewwords.
However,someproblemshaveariseninthepracticalteachingandlearning.Teachershaveignoredtheimportanceofvocabularyteaching,thetraditionalteachingmethodshavetendedtoinhibitthedevelopmentofcommunicativeabilitiesandstudentshavelearnedvocabularywithoutenoughcontactwithcontexts.Sothisthesisiswrittentomakeagreatefforttosolvetheseproblems.
Inthisthesis,atfirst,theessentialityofvocabularylearningandteachingisoffered,whichenablesstudentstorealizethepowerofvocabulary.Then,mainproblemsofpresentEnglishteachingarelistedinseniorhighschools.Furthermore,severalaspectsofCAarepresented.Theyarebackground,theories,andfeatures,allofthesearebeneficialtohelpstudentsandteacherstohaveabetterunderstandingofCA.Finally,theapplicationofCAinvocabularyclassisillustrated,whichinvolveshowtoteachvocabulary,andwhatrolesteachersandstudentsshouldplay.Meanwhile,todrawtheattentionofstudentsandteachersonthebenefitofCAinvocabularyclass,asuccessfulvocabularyclassisdemonstrated.
