）sincewe,rearedinmoredeferentialtimes,couldneverhavegotawaywithit.

OnethingthathashelpedmethroughtheseturbulentyearsisthecommentoftheBritishpsychoanalystDonaldWinnicottthat"

theadolescentboyorgirl...[does]notwanttobeunderstood.Adultsmusthideamongthemselveswhattheycometounderstandofadolescence."

Wemightbeseeinganewbreedofadolescent,atotallydifferentkindofteenagetribe.Atribesodifferenttheyprobablyshouldnotevenbecalledteenagersanymore-abettertermmightbeMetrolescents,thedefiningcharacteristicoftheMetrolescentbeingthat,intheageoftheinternetandtheall-powerfulteenmedia,theyareunited,bonded,onthesamepagelikeneverbefore.Itusedtobethatkidsinsuburbia,orinvillagesorsmalltowns,usedtofeelleftout;

youhadtomakeanefforttobepartoftheaction,tofightandscrabbleyourwayin.

IntheeraoftheMetrolescent,itispossibletoliveinthecrummiest,far-flungareaandstillfeelpartofthings.Fashionstakesecondstofilterthrough,thegossipsuper-highwayisamerelog-onaway.Suddenly,theyouthsceneiseverywhere,foreverybody.Whichmightbetheproblem.

For,inonehugelyparadoxi
