Thecommonteaplantistheevergreenshrub,Camelliasinensis.Thereareseveralvarietiesofthisspeciesofplant,awellknownonebeingtheIndianAssamtea(C.sinensisvar.assamicaKitamura).Traditionally,teaispreparedfromitsdriedyoungleavesandleafbuds,madeintoabeveragebysteepingtheleavesinboilingwater.Chinaiscreditedwithintroducingteatotheworld,thoughtheevergreenteaplantisinfactnativetoSouthernChina,NorthIndia,MyanmarandCambodia.
