@#@26,February27,2012@#@TaiChihasalonghistoryoftraditioninChinaforthousandsofyears.IntheUnitedStates,themartialart’spopularityhasbeenincreasingsignificantly.Accordingtothe2007NationalHealthInterviewSurvey,around2.5millionAmericanspracticedTaiChi.Itssurgingrecognitionispartlyduetothemanyresearchandstudiesthathavebeenaccumulatedoverthepastyears.MostofthemprovedthebenefitsofTaiChitopatientswithchronicdiseases.EarlierinFebruary,anewreleaseshowsthatTaiChimayhelppatientswhoaresufferingfromParkinson’sdisease.People’sDailyOnlineUSAspoketotheHeadofResearchofthisstudy.@#@"@#@Nowadays,TiaChihasbeenusedmoreofteninclinicalsettings,suchasrehabsettingsandphysicaltherapysettings.Itispartoftheirrehabilitationtechniquestotreatpatientswithdifferentdiseaseproblems.That’sabigstepforwardforTaiChi,”saidProfessorFuzhongLiatOregonResearchInstituteintheUnitedStates.@#@Thestudy,titled“TaiChiandPosturalStabilityinPatientswithParkinson’sdisease”,givesnewhopetomanypeoplewhosedailylivesarehamperedbybalanceimpairments.Peoplesufferfromthisdisorderhavehighriskoffallingandareunabletoperformchallengingtasks.ThestudyshowsthatTaiChimayhelppatientstoregainphysicalbalanceandfunctionalityperformance,allowingthemtoaccomplishcertainbasictasks,suchasgrabbingashoppingbagfromatable.@#@Thestudysaysthat“TaiChitrainingappearstoreducebalanceimpairmentsinpatientswithmild-to-moderateParkinson’sdisease,withadditionalbenefitsofimprovedfunctionalcapacityandreducedfalls.”@#@"@#@WhatisgoodaboutTaiChiisthatit’shighlyself-initiative,”Lisaid.“Itisdoneinslowmotionandmovements,anditisdoneinacontinuousandrhythmicalpattern.Moreimportantly,it’scontrollable.Itiscontrolledbythemind.”@#@TheprogramoftheresearchwasdifferentfromtheTaiChiprogramstypicallyofferedbythecommunities,Lisaid.Traditionally,aTaiChimasterwouldinstructstudentstocenterthemselvesbyputtingtheirbodymassinthecentretoavoidbeinguprootedbyopponents.Li’sapproachwastheopposite.Iturgedpatientstomoveawayfromthecentre.Forexample,apatientwouldbeaskedtoleanforwardtoapointwhereheorshemusttakeasteptopreventfromfalling.Lisaidtheirapproachfocusesmoreonstimulatingpeople’smuscleresponses,particularlythemusclesrelatedtoposturalcontrol.@#@"@#@TaiChiistostable;@#@theapproachwetakeistounstable,sothatwecantrainpeopletoreadaptthemovements,andbeabletousethatmovementsinadailylife,suchastakingstepsandreachingoutforanobject,”Lisaid.“Inotherwords,wetransformtraditionalTaiChitophysicaltherapythatcouldhelppeoplewithbalanceimpairmentandpeoplewhohavedifficultiesinwalking.”@#@OriginallyfromShanghai,China,LihasbeenfamiliarwithTaiChi’straditionanditsbenefits.ButtheideathatTaiChimaypossiblyhelpParkinson’sdiseasepatientsfirstcameupwhenacoupleofLi’sfriendswerediagnosedwiththedisorder.Seeinghisfriendsexperiencedfrequentfalls,jerkymovements,anddifficultiesinwalking,Li,along-timeTaiChipractitioner,begantothinkTaiChicouldpotentiallyopenthedoortoParkinson’sdisease.@#@"@#@Asaresearcher,Ialsowanttounderstandhowthistraditionalexercisecouldhelppeople,especiallythosewhosufferfromchronicdiseases.IstartedtogetinterestedinhowTaiChicanbeusedtosolvesevereproblemsthatpeoplefacethesedays,”hesaid.@#@Thestudytookthreeandahalfyeartocomplete.LisaidParkinson’sdiseasehasfivestages,withonetothreeasmildtomoderate,whilestagefouriswherepeoplehavehardtimewalking.Patientsinstagefivewouldbeconfinedtobed.The195patientsintheprogramwerealldiagnosedwiththedisorderwithinthefirstthreestages.Theywereassignedtooneofthreeexercisegroups:
