StudentsfromtheSanDiegoJewishAcademyintheUSbroketheGuinnessWorldRecordwhentheymanagedtomakemorethan800sandwichesinthreeminutesonApril1.
However,thestudentsweredoingmorethanjustsettingaworldrecord.Theygavethesandwichestothehomelessandsolearnedalessonabouthelpingtheircommunity.
“Wewantourstudentstoknowit’snotenoughtotalkaboutchangingtheworld,”saidschoolprincipalChaimHeller.“It’snotenoughtoraisemoneytochangetheworld.Youhavetouseyourhandsandfeet.”
Theworldrecordformakingthemostsandwichesinthreeminuteshadbeen490.Butthe550studentsfromkindergartento12thgrademayhavebrokenthatrecordbymaking868sandwichesintheschoolgym.
ThesandwichesweregiventotheAlphaProject,whichservedthemlaterthatdaytohomelesspeopleandlow-incomeresidentsaroundAlphaSquare.
Studentsfound52tableswaitingforthemintheschoolgym,eachlaidoutwithslicesofbread,lettuce,slicedtomatoesandAmericancheese.Forty-fiveparentvolunteerswereonhandtohelp,andanoteoneachtabletoldthestudentswhattoputineachsandwich–twoslicesofcheese,onesliceoftomatoandonepieceoflettuce.
Thegym’sscoreboardwassetatthreeminutes.Acountdownstarted,abellrangandtablesthroughoutthegymbecameaflurryof(一阵忙乱)fast-movingcheeseandbread.
Theyoungeststudentsmadeonesandwicheachwhileolderonesmadetwo.Withintwominutes,almostallofthestudentshadsteppedbackfromtheirtable.Theywavedtheirglovedhandsintheairtoshowthattheyhadfinished.
