●Beowulf,thestoryofthepoem,isnotaboutEngland,butaboutHrothgar,theKingoftheDanes,andaboutabraveyoungman,Beowulf,fromsouthernSweden,whogoestohelptheKing.Hrothgerisintrouble.Hisgreathall,calledHeorot,isvisitedatnightbyaterriblecreature,Grendel,whichlivesinalakeandcomestokillandeatHrothgar’smen.Onenight,Beowulfwaitssecretlyforthisthing,attacksit,andinafiercefightpullsitsarmoff.Itmanagestoreachthelakeagain,butdiesthere.Thenitsmothercomestothehallinsearchofrevenge,andtheattacksbeginagain.Beowulffollowshertothebottomofthelakeandkillsherthere.Itisthere,toothathefindsthedeadbodyofGrendel.HecutsofftheheadsofthetwomonstersandbringsthetwohairyheadsastrophiesbacktotheDanishhall.Thetriumphiscelebratedinfeastingandsong.
