ABSTRACT

Ultra-WidebandUWBtechnologyislooselydefinedasanywirelesstransmissionschemethatoccupiesabandwidthofmorethan25%ofacenterfrequency,ormorethan1.5GHzTheFederalCommunicationsCommissionFCCiscurrentlyworkingonsettingemissionslimitsthatwouldallowUWBcommunicationsystemstobedeployedonanunlicensedbasisfollowingthePart15.209rulesforradiatedemissionsofintentionalradiators,thesamerulesgoverningtheradiatedemissionsfromhomecomputers,forexample.ThisrulechangewouldallowUWB-enableddevicestooverlayexistingnarrowbandsystems,whichiscurrentlynotallowed,andresultinamuchmoreefficientuseoftheavailablespectrumDevicescould,inessence,fillintheunusedportionsofthefrequencyspectruminanyparticularlocationTheserecentdevelopmentsbytheFCCgiveIntelauniqueopportunitytodevelopequipmentthatcouldpotentiallytakeadvantageofthevastamountofusablespectrumthatexistsinthewirelessspace,andthatcouldprovideanenginetodrivethefuturehigh-rateapplicationsthatarebeingconceivedthroughoutthisindustry

ArchitectureLabsIALiscurrentlyresearchingUWBtechnologyinordertobetterunderstanditsbenefits,limitations,andtechnicalchallengeswhenusedforhigh-ratecommunicationsThispaperintroducesthereadertothistechnology,frompotentialapplicationstoregulatoryhurdles,topossibleimplementationsandfuturechallenges.

INTRODUCTION

Ultra-WidebandUWBtechnologyhasbeenaroundsincethe1980s,butithasbeenmainlyusedforradar-basedapplicationsuntilnowsee[1]andthereferencestherein,becauseofthewidebandnatureofthesignalthatresultsinveryaccuratetiminginformation.However,duetorecentdevelopmentsinhigh-speedswitchingtechnology,UWBisbecomingmoreattractiveforlowcostconsumercommunicationsapplicationsasdetailedinthe“ImplementationAdvantages”sectionofthispaper.IntelArchitectureLabsIALiscurrentlyworkingonaninternallyfundedresearchprojectwhoseintentistofurtherexplorethepotentialbenefitsandfuturechallengesforextendingUWBtechnologyintothehigh-ratecommunicationsarena

AlthoughthetermUltra-WidebandUWBisnotverydescriptive,itdoeshelptoseparatethistechnologyfrommoretraditional“narrowband”systemsaswellasnewer“wideband”systemstypicallyreferredtointheliteraturedescribingthefuture3Gcellulartechnology.TherearetwomaindifferencesbetweenUWBandother“narrowband”or“wideband”systems.First,thebandwidthofUWBsystems,asdefinedbytheFederalCommunicationsCommissionFCCin[2],ismorethan25%ofacenterfrequencyormorethan1.5GHzClearly,thisbandwidthismuchgreaterthanthebandwidthusedbyanycurrenttechnologyforcommunication.Second,UWBistypicallyimplementedinacarrierlessfashion.Conventional“narrowband”and“wideband”systemsuseRadioFrequencyRFcarrierstomovethesignalinthefrequencydomainfrombasebandtotheactualcarrierfrequencywherethesystemisallowedtooperate.Conversely,UWBimplementationscandirectlymodulatean“impulse”thathasaverysharpriseandfalltime,thusresultinginawaveformthatoccupiesseveralGHzofbandwidthAlthoughthereareothermethodsforgeneratingaUWBwaveformusingachirpedsignal,forexample,inthispaper,wefocusontheimpulse-basedUWBwaveform.but,first,abreakdownofhowthispaperisorganized.

WIRELESSALTERNATIVES

InordertounderstandwhereUWBfitsinwiththecurrenttrendsinwirelesscommunications,weneedtoconsiderthegeneralproblemthatcommunicationssystemstrytosolve.Specifically,ifwirelesswereanidealmedium,wecoulduseittosend.

Unfortunately,itisimpossibletoachieveallfiveattributessimultaneouslyforsystemssupportingunique,private,two-waycommunicationstreams;

oneormorehavetobegivenupiftheothersaretodowell.Originalwirelesssystemswerebuilttobridgelargedistancesinordertolinktwopartiestogether.However,recenthistoryofradioshowsacleartrendtowardimprovingontheotherfourattributesattheexpenseofdistanceCellulartelephonyisthemostobviousexample,coveringdistancesof30kilometerstoaslittleas300metersShorterdistancesallowforspectrumreuse,therebyservingmoreusers,andthesystemsarepracticalbecausetheyaresupportedbyanunderlyingwiredinfrastructure
