AtschoolTom,whohasworkedasaliteraryagentandnowhasafull-timejobwithadigitalpublishingcompany,wouldoftenfindkeepingupinlessonssotiringthathewouldfallasleep.“IfounditquitefrustratingthateverybodyelsehadneathandwritingandcouldspellandIjustcouldn’tdowhattheycould,”saysTom,whohaswrittenarespectedbiographyofcrimewriterRaymondChandler.
Itwasn’tuntiltheageof17thathewasgivenatestfordyslexiathatshowedwhyhe’dstruggledforsolong.HewasalwaysstudyingforA-levelsincludingEnglish.
“Myteacherdidn’tthinkI’dgetthegradesIwascapableof,”hesays.“SoshepushedformetobetestedandI’mgratefulthatshedid.”
UntilhisdiagnosisTomhadbeenrankedsomewhereinthemiddleofhisclassesatschool.Hecouldn’tunderstandwhyassignmentswouldcomebackcoveredinredink.However,afterTom’sdiagnosis,whenhisconditionbegantobetakenproperlyintoaccount,hefoundhimselfatthetopoftheclass.
TostudyEnglishwell,hewrotedownnewwordsashecameacrossthemandtriedtofindsomewherequietandwelllittoreadandwrite.
HesayspeoplewereoftensurprisedthatsomeonewithdyslexiawantedtopursueadegreeinEnglish.Similarly,whenhewenttostudyatUniversityCollegeLondon,thetutorswereinitiallytakenabackathisdegreechoice.
Noteveryoneunderstandsdyslexiasowell.“Ifteachersaren’ttrainedtorecognizesignsofdyslexia,they’llthinkchildrenarelessable,”hesays.Tomakesurethatdoesn’thappenandtoencourageadeeperunderstandingoftheconditionamongthoseaffectedbyit,TombecomesasupporterofthecharityDyslexiaAction.
