OriginandDevelopmentofNFPA17A

TheDryChemicalExtinguishingSystemsCommitteewasactivatedin1952.OnApril6,1983,theStandardsCouncilreceivedarequesttoassignthesubjectofwetchemicalextinguishingsystemstotheappropriatecommittee.Listedsystemshadbeenavailableforsometime.AftertheFoamCommitteedeclinedtherequest,theDryChemicalCommitteewasaskedtoassumeresponsibilityfortheproject.InMay1983,theDryChemicalExtinguishingSystemsCommitteevotedtoaccepttheassignmentandrequestedthattheStandardsCouncilexpandtheCommitteeScopetoincludethenewtopic.TheCommitteealsorequestedthatthenewdocumentbeidentifiedasNFPA17A,StandardforWetChemicalExtinguishingSystems.AsubcommitteemetinJune1983todevelopthetext.InNovember1984,theCouncilapprovedarequesttochangethenameoftheCommitteetotheCommitteeonDryandWetChemicalExtinguishingSystems.The1990editionwasapartialrevisionofthe1986edition.

The1998editionofthisstandardhasbeenrevisedtoclarifytherequirementsforprotectionofunclosableopeningsandequipmentshutdown.
