IhateArt,Trudythoughtasshewenthomeonthebus.AndIhateschool!

Shewishedsheneverhadtogotoschoolagain.

Thebusstoppedoutsideherhouse.Shejumpedupfromherseat.Herelbowknockedawoman’shatrightoverhereyes.

Shegotoffthebusandranindoors.

Assoonassheopenedthedoorsheknewsomethingwaswrong.Thehousewastooquiet.Notasoundfromthekitchen.Notasoundinthehall.

‘Mum?

’shecalled.

‘I’mupstairs,Trudy.’Mum’svoicesoundedstrange,allhoarseandcroaky.

Trudywentupstairstwo-at-a-time.Sheopenedthebedroomdoor.

Mumlayinbed,holdingaboxofpaperhankies.‘I’vegotanawfulcold,’shesaid.‘Don’tcometoocloseoryoumightcatchit.’

‘Okay.’Trudystayednearthedoor.‘ShallImakeyouamugoftea?

Mumsaidquickly,‘No,thanks.I’llwaittillyourdadgetshome.’
