sNorthShoreandinNewYorkCityduringthesummerof1922.ThenoveltakesplacefollowingtheWorldWarI.Afteritsrepublishingin1945and1953,itquicklyfoundawidereadershipandistodaywidelyregardedasaparagonoftheGreatAmericanNovel,andaliteraryclassic.InTheGreatGatsbyFitzgeraldpresentsaverydifferentviewofGatsby.Gatsbyisayoung,mysteriousmillionairelaterrevealedtobeabootlegger,withshadybusinessconnectionsandanobsessiveloveforDaisyFayBuchanan,whomhehadmetwhenhewasayoungofficerinWorldWarI.Afterthewar,GatsbycameeastandboughthismansionnearDaisyandTom,wherehehostspartieshopingshewillvisit,andthenGatsbyandDaisybeginaloveaffair.AsforGatsby,Daisyisrepresentingasagoalhewantstoachieve;

Therefore,alotofscholarshavemadedeepstudyonthisnovel.Firstly,somepeoplearetalkingaboutGatsbyandhisdream.CuiShu-chen’sCharacterandSymbolsinTheGreatGatsby(1995)itissuggestedthatJayGatsbyisthemoststrikingfigureinthenovel,whoisinpursuitofanelusivedreamwhicheventhoughsometimesiswithinhisgrasp,continuessomehowtoevadehim.Withgreatmagnitudeofhisglitteringillusionandthesinglemindedness,Gatsbytriestomakeitarealityandhesacrificeshislifeonthealtarofhisdream,unawarethatitiscomposedoftheephemeralstuffofthepast.What’smore,HuangChunying,theauthorofThePursuitandLossofAmericanDream(2004),pointsoutthatGatsbyisnotonlyaconcretemanifestationofconflictbetweenfantasyandrealityinreallife,butalsotheembodimentofAmericanromantichero.YangWeilueobservesthevariousstylesofFitzgerald’sworks;
