ourcountryisnotflourishing.theenormouscreativeandspiritualpotentialofournationsisnotbeingusedsensibly.entirebranchesofindustryareproducinggoodsthatareofnointeresttoanyone,whilewearelackingthethingsweneed.astatewhichcallsitselfaworkers'statehumiliatesandexploitsworkers.ourobsoleteeconomyiswastingthelittleenergywehaveavailable.acountrythatoncecouldbeproudoftheeducationallevelofitscitizensspendssolittleoneducationthatitrankstodayasseventy-secondintheworld.wehavepollutedthesoil,riversandforestsbequeathedtousbyourancestors,andwehavetodaythemostcontaminatedenvironmentineurope.adultsinourcountrydieearlierthaninmostothereuropeancountries.

thebestgovernmentintheworld,thebestparliamentandthebestpresident,cannotachievemuchontheirown.anditwouldbewrongtoexpectageneralremedyfromthemalone.freedomanddemocracyincludeparticipationandthereforeresponsibilityfromusall.

ifwerealizethis,thenallthehorrorsthatthenewczechoslovakdemocracyinheritedwillceasetoappearsoterrible.ifwerealizethis,hopewillreturntoourhearts.
