Today,formaleducationservesagreaterpercentageoftheU.S.populationthanatanytimeinhistory.Itplayedanimportantrole,butstillexistsomeproblems.TheinfluenceofmodernpsychologyandofeducationreformerssuchasJohnDeweycausedschoolstobecomelessformal,morerelaxed,andsomewhatmorecenteredontheindividualchildratherthanontheinstitutionorthesociety.Schoolfacilitiesimprovedformoststudents,exceptperhapsintheinnercities.Moremoneywasspentoneducation,resultinginbothageneralupgradingofteachersalariesandimprovementsinprogramsthatfocusonspecifickindsofstudents,suchasspecialeducation.
Besides,somemembersoftheschoolreformmovementbelievethattoolittlepowerexistsatthelocallevel.Theyclaimthatteachersandschoolscanincreasetheireffectivenessonlybyhavinggreaterauthorityoversuchfundamentalmattersascurriculumcontent,teachingmethods,andhiringofstaff.Otherreformerscontendthatnotalllocalcommunitieshavetheresourcestoprovidequalityeducation.Theyarguethattomeetgoalsofequityandexcellence,alllocaldistrictsshouldmeethigheducationalstandardsandprovideampleschoolbudgets.
