Beforethenovelopens,Hemingwayquotestwoepigraphs.Thefirstoneis“Youareallthelostgeneration”.Theotheroneis“Theworldendures,andthesuncontinuestoriseandsetdespitetheinevitablepassageofeachhumangenerationintodeath”.Thesetwoepigraphsproducesanambivalenttone.Ontheonehand,thereishope,becausetherewillbeanewgenerationaftertheaimlessgenerationthatpopulatesTheSunAlsoRises,Ontheotherhand,thereisbitterirony,sinceeverygenerationislost,inonesensebecause,eachgenerationwilleventuallydie.
Inthisnovel,HemingwayportraysthelivesofLostGeneration,thegroupofmenandwomenwhoseearlyadulthoodwasconsumedbyWorldWarI.ThishorifickconflictinWar,setnewstandersfordeathandimmorality.Itshatteredmanypeople’sbeliefsintraditionalvaluesoflove,faith,andmanhood.Withouttheselong-heldnotionstorelyon,theirlivesbecomeaimless.
NearlyallofJake’sfriendsarealcoholics.Wherevertheyhappentobe,theydrink,usuallytoexcess.Often,theirdrinkingisaformofescaptiom.DrunkennessallowJakeandhisfriendstoendurelivesseverelylackinginaffectionandpurpose.Howeveralcoholfrequentlybringsouttheworstintheirmentalandemotionalturmoil.
