tworkoutduetochangesinschedulesonbothsides.Also,theywereplanningtodotheclimbatnighttobeabletoreachthepeakatsunrise.Thatdidnotappealtous.Wewantedtospendanightonthemountain.Fran'

sdepartmentarrangedatripforus,makingreservationsatthesimplehotelontheNorthPeak.Theysenttwograduatestudentstoaccompanyus,thoughtheyhadnotbeentoHuaShanbefore.Wemetthemat8:

00onSaturdaymorningandtookataxitothetrainstation.Thereweaskedaroundandlocatedamini-bus.Thebusmadeacoupleofstops.Onewastoseeapresentationaboutthetraditionalmedicinesgrownonthemountainandachancetobuysomeofthem.ItprobablywouldhavebeeninterestingifweunderstoodChinese.Ourguidesgaveusthegeneraloutlineaboutwhatwassaid.Theotherstopwasaquicklunchstop.

  TherearetwoapproachestoHuaShan.[Chineseproverb:

“ThereisoneroadandonlyoneroadtoHuaShan,”meaningthatsometimesthehardwayistheonlyway.]Thewestentranceinvolves10kilometersofwalkingonaroadbeforeyoustartclimbing.Wewentwiththeeastentrance,wherethebusbringsyoutothebaseofacablecarthatgoesuptothe1500meterNorthPeak.OurplanwastowalkuptotheNorthPeak,thenclimbtothefourotherpeaksthenextdayandtakethecablecardown.

  Westartedtheclimbintheearlyafternoon.Thepathconsistsofstonestepswithroughchainlinkhandrailsinthenarrowestareas(weworeourbicyclingglovesforhandprotection)。

Physically,itismorelikeclimbingthestepsofaskyscraperthantrailsathome.However,thetemperaturewasabout95degreesandtherewasnotmuchshade.Webroughtlotsofwater,includingsomebottlesthatwefrozeandsomeGatoradethatwegotatthefancydepartmentstoreindowntownXian.Thereareplentyofrefreshmentstandsalongthewaywhereyoucanbuybottledwater,theChineseequivalentofGatorade,andotherdrinksorsnacksatapremiumprice.

  WereachedtheNorthPeakbefore4:

00PMandrestedatthehotel.Ourroomwasbasic,butcomfortableandcleanenough.Becausewaterisscarceonthemountain,therewereneithershowersnorsinksavailableforwashing.Inthatsensetheexperiencefeltlikecamping,butweweresleepinginabigtent!

  Afterdinneratthehotelrestaurant,wespentsometimetalkingwithourguides.WewereabitsurprisedtofindthattheyboththinkofJapannegatively,butliketheU.S.ItseemsthatJapan'

sWWIIbehaviorinChinahasnotbeenforgotten,andisemphasizedinschool.

  Wesawabeautifulsunsetandwatchedtheskybecomeresplendentwiththousandsofstars,includingtheMilkyWaygalaxy.ThiswastheclearestskythatwehaveseeninChina.ThefreshairatHuaShanisatreat!

  Ourguideshadbothbeenplanningtogetupat4:

00AMtowatchthesunrise.FranandImadesleepapriority.Wedidhappentowakeupabitbeforesunrise(ourroomfacedeast)andwentoutsidetowatchtheskybecomerosy.Ironically,ourguidesmissedthesunrisebecausetheyhadstayeduplatewatchingtheEuropeansoccerchampionshipsonthetelevisionintheirroom

  Theplanforthedaywastoclimbtheotherfourpeaks,butwereservedtherighttoshortentheroute.ThefirstpartwasasteepclimbtoMiddlePeak.AfterthelowNorthPeak,alltheothersareatroughly20xxmeters.TherewerecrowdsonthewaytoMiddlePeak–mostlyChinesehikersbutwedidseeafewotherwaiguo(foreigners)aswell.

  WevisitedtwoTaoisttemplesenroutetoMiddlePeak.Eachonehadanaltarwithincenseandofferingsoffruit.Thefriendlymonksinvitedustosayaprayerortosendblessingstolovedones.Franacceptedtheirinvitation.Atthefirsttemple,shelitincensesticksandkneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarsayingasilentprayerforoursafejourneytothevarioussummitsofHuaShan(theprayerwasanswered)。

Atthesecondtemple,shekneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarandsentsilentblessingstoseveralfriendswhoareexperiencingchallengingsituationsintheirlivesatpresent.Aftereachblessing,sheleanedforwardandthemonkstruckadrum.

  AfterMiddlePeak,thecrowdsgotmuchthinner.ThenextwasEastPeak,whichhadasteepladderclimbingrock.Franwasdubiousaboutthisascent,butrealizedthattheladderwasn'
