1INTRODUCTION
TheeconomicconditionsfortheGermanhardcoalminingindustryhavechangedsignificantlyinrecentyears.TheGermanhardcoalindustryhaduntiltheearly1990sasecuresellingmarket.The,,Jahrhundertvertrag”guaranteedthepurchaseofGermanhardcoalbyheavyindustryandsteelandenergyproviders.InthelastfewyearsthedevelopmentoftheEuropeanUnionandasweepingliberalizationoftheenergymarketsleadtoheavyEuropeanandinternationalrivalry.Thisincreasingcompetition,causedbytheimportofinexpensivehardcoalfromoverseas,pressuredtheGermanhardcoalindustrytoreact.Itwasnecessarytoconcentratetheextractiononthemostprofitablecollieriesandtoexcavateonlythemostsuitablepartsofthedeposits.Untilrecentlyitwasrequiredtominetheentiredeposit.Althoughthenumbertheminingoperationsdecreasedfrom147in1990to64in1997a56%decrease,thecoaloutputdecreasedbyonly32%to47mu,tons.Thisconcentrationwillcontinue.Additionally,areductionofthecostsofproductionandanincreaseinproductivityrequiredthedevelopmentofnewandinnovativetechniquesandfaceequipment.ThegoalofthesedevelopmentsistocompensateforthecompetitivedisadvantageduetothegreatdepthoftheGermanhardcoaldepositswiththemostmoderntechnologyandminingmethods.
