Shortlyaftermyfourthbirthday,myparentsandIarrivedfromChinainSydney,Australia.Itwas1991andmymotherhadleftbehindeverythingsheknew-family,friendsandcareer.

Yetwithintwoyears,myparents’marriagehadbrokendown.Afteroneparticularlyunpleasantfight,mymotherleftmyfather,takingmewithher.Withnofamilyorfriends,andinacountrywhereshecouldn’tevencommunicate,shetookmetoChinatown,theonlyareaofSydneyshewasfamiliarwith.ThatnightshelaidmeonabenchinDixonStreet,packingsuitcasesaroundusforsecurity.Iwillneverforgetthedespairinherfacethatnight.

Ataround4am,agroupoffouryoungChinesemennoisilyexitedaclubnearby.Irememberthemfallingsilentastheysawus.Theyapproachedandaskedmymotherwhyshewassleepingonthestreetswithsuchayoungchild.Mymumburstintotearsasshetoldthemourstory.Withouthesitating,theybundledmeup,tookoursuitcases,anddroveustotheirstudentshousing.
