evenpeopletoshowcourageintheirattempttowinpower,influence,moneyortosavetheirlovedones.Butthemaninthewaterdidnotfitanyofthesedescriptions.

hedidnotevenknowthesepeople.Hewasextraordinarypreciselybecausehewasordinary.Heshowedwhateveryoneofuscoulddo.Thedisplayofhisheroismwasasongtothebeautifulhumancharacter.Thisistrueheroism.
Background
ThisisshortessayaboutanaircrashthattookplaceinthecapitaloftheUSintheyear1982.AplanetookofffromtheWashingtonNationalAirportanddidnotclearthebridgeoverthePotomacRiverbecauseofthethickiceonthewings.Ithitthebridgeandfellrightintotheriver,bringingallthepassengerstoinstantdeathexceptsixfromthetailsectionwhofoundthemselvesgaspingandstrugglingintheicywater.Onlyfivepeoplesurvived,andtheywereabletosurvivebecauseoffourheroes.Theauthorwrotethisessayinpraiseoftheseheroes,threeofwhomhadriskedtheirlivestorescuethesurvivorsandwereabletolivetotellthestory,butthemanthatreallyheldthewholenation’sattentionwasthefourthmanwhohadkeptpushinghislifelineandfloatationringstoothersuntilhewentunder.
