RogerRosenblattisajournalist,author,playwrightandprofessor.AsanessayistforTimemagazine,hehaswontwoGeorgePolkAwards,andawardsfromtheOverseasPressClubandtheAmericanBarAssociation.RogerRosenblatt,anAmericanplaywrightandessayist,istheauthorofsixbooks.ThisessayonanairplanecrashinWashington,D.C.,originallyappearedinTimeonJanuary25,1982.

Askstudentstoreadthetextandthenexpresstheirideasaboutheroism

Heroism:

Heroismofcoursehasbeenadmired.Butthisman’sheroismwasunusual.Peopleusuallyexpectrevolutionariestodiemartyrs;

truebelieverstobewillingtodiefortheirfaith;

peoplereadytolaydowntheirlivesinperformingtheirduty;

evenpeopletoshowcourageintheirattempttowinpower,influence,moneyortosavetheirlovedones.Butthemaninthewaterdidnotfitanyofthesedescriptions.

Themaninthewaterdidnothavetogivehisringstoothers;

hedidnotevenknowthesepeople.Hewasextraordinarypreciselybecausehewasordinary.Heshowedwhateveryoneofuscoulddo.Thedisplayofhisheroismwasasongtothebeautifulhumancharacter.Thisistrueheroism.

Background

ThisisshortessayaboutanaircrashthattookplaceinthecapitaloftheUSintheyear1982.AplanetookofffromtheWashingtonNationalAirportanddidnotclearthebridgeoverthePotomacRiverbecauseofthethickiceonthewings.Ithitthebridgeandfellrightintotheriver,bringingallthepassengerstoinstantdeathexceptsixfromthetailsectionwhofoundthemselvesgaspingandstrugglingintheicywater.Onlyfivepeoplesurvived,andtheywereabletosurvivebecauseoffourheroes.Theauthorwrotethisessayinpraiseoftheseheroes,threeofwhomhadriskedtheirlivestorescuethesurvivorsandwereabletolivetotellthestory,butthemanthatreallyheldthewholenation’sattentionwasthefourthmanwhohadkeptpushinghislifelineandfloatationringstoothersuntilhewentunder.
