PREFACE
Every
experiencedteachermusthavenoticedthedifficultyofinstructingIndianchildrenoutofbooksthatarespeciallyintendedforuseinEnglishschools.Itisnotmerelythatthesubjectsareunfamiliar,butalmosteveryphrasehasEnglishassociationsthatarestrangetoIndianears.TheenvironmentinwhichtheyarewrittenisunknowntotheIndianschoolboyandhismindbecomesoverburdenedwithitsdetailswhichhefailstounderstand.Hecannotgivehiswholeattentiontothelanguageandthusmasteritquickly.
ThepresentIndianstory-bookavoidssomeatleastoftheseimpediments.Thesurroundingsdescribedinitarethoseofthestudents'
everydaylife;
thesentimentsandcharactersarefamiliar.Thestoriesaresimplytold,andthenotesattheendwillbesufficienttoexplainobscurepassages.ItshouldbepossiblefortheIndianstudenttofollowthepagesofthebookeasilyandintelligently.ThosestudentswhohavereadthestoriesintheoriginalwillhavethefurtheradvantageofknowingbeforehandthewholetrendofthenarrativeandthustheywillbeabletoconcentratetheirthoughtsontheEnglishlanguageitself.
ItisproposedtopublishtogetherinasinglevolumetheoriginalstorieswhoseEnglishtranslationsaregiveninthisReader.VersionsofthesamestoriesinthedifferentIndianvernacularshavealreadyappeared,andothersarelikelytofollow.
